During the second week of June my wife and I both got sick. On the 12th of June My wife, Peggy, was taken to the emergency room and checked for covid-19 and tested positive. Later that same evening she was placed on a ventilator. She is still in the hospital. On the morning of the 26th of June they removed the ventilator as a test to see if she could breath on her own, by nightime it was clear she could not survive without it and the decision was made to re-insert the ventalator tube. When they did her pulse and blood pressure dropped to nothing and they had to do CPR on her for nearly fifteen minutes to get her back. The doctor told me the other day that she actually died twice during her ICU time and was brought back twice. All of this was relayed to me by her doctor because of course no one was allowed to visit her in the Covid ICU.
The ventilator was removed again on July 6th but because of the damage to her throat and the swelling they had to do a tracheostomy so she could get enough oxygen, a feeding tube was also placed in her stomach.
A few days after my wife was admitted I tested positive as well but my symtoms were a bad cough, aches and pains and loss of smell, whiched lasted only a few days.
My wife is a special needs school bus driver. Her job was half our income. Because of the so called affordable health care act, the price of an insurance policy for her was far more than our mortgage payment a month. It was a choice of have and keep our home or have insurance. Her job does not provide insurance. we have been married 44 years, worked hard for what we have, but this will nearly destroy what we have worked for all these years. 45 days in the hospital, most all of those in ICU. Go Fund me asks to set a goal for what is needed. How much will 45+ days in ICU cost? I can't begin to guess. To add insult to injury just the everyday cost of living was damaged because she was sick she could not apply for her job attached unemployment, so that was cut off along with the governments $600.00 emplyment boost from the pandemic.
Peggy is improving slowly, but now the burden of paying for and keeping our home will be shared by both of us and she really does not need that now as she is trying to get better. We worked hard for our home, we are not extravagant people. In our 44 years together our modest vacations have consisted of visiting family/ family reunions out of state and such, paying down the mortgage and hoping to have some bit of a retirement in the future. It is not easy asking for help when you have been able to handle things in the past, even if it was pay check to pay check most of the time. I hope you can find it in your heart, if you can to help. I'am not a church going man but I believe prayer helped my wife through this. God bless.
