Symon's Mitzvah Project - Treadmills for HSC

Donation protected
I have been a toe walker my entire life and was always told it was fine.  It was a day a few years ago when my Aunt Gail, who is a physical therapist, took me outside to view my feet, my gait, my toe walking, and range of motion. She saw that the range of motion was not nearly strong enough for a child my age and told me and my parents this could be because I walk on my toes. So, I started going to the HSC Pediatric Center, which is a small children’s hospital in DC, for serial casting and physical therapy. I’ve done this periodically for the last few years to expand my range of motion in my ankle and foot and stretch my Achilles tendons.

Since I began attending the HSC Pediatric Center, I have noticed that they do so much more than serial casting and physical therapy, they help kids who may never walk again and make it so they can. Since I’ve gone there, I have realized how lucky I am to ONLY need serial cast and how there are many children who attend this hospital who need so much more than casts to even think about walking.

Based on a recommendation from my Aunt Hannah for my Bar Mitzvah Project, which is a part of my synagogue’s bar or bat mitzvah preparation encouraging us to help my community and take responsibility of a cause I believe in and try to make it better, I am raising money to buy necessary equipment for the departments which have assisted me at the HSC Pediatric Center.  Specifically, they are currently in need of a diagnostic rehabilitation treadmill which takes into account many different aspects of a child’s body and assists with teaching them how to create muscle memory and the ability to walk and possibly run. I kindly request that you please consider donating to my mitzvah project.

By donating, you can help many District youth have a chance at walking properly instead of being bound to a life of walkers and/or wheelchairs.  I am so grateful to the staff who have helped me at the Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Equipment Department and Physical Therapy Department of HSC Pediatric Center and if my Bar Mitzvah project can help others like me and much worse off than me have the equipment they need to get the help they need I would be very happy.
