On September 27, 2020 Sylvia was taken to the emergency room of our local hospital suffering from a distended abdomen and pain. She had been ill for several weeks, but was still not prepared for the seriousness of her condition.
Within hours of seeking help, Sylvia was admitted to the oncology ward with a diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer.
Due to the advanced stage of her cancer Sylvia will have chemotherapy in an attempt to make surgical removal of as much of her malignancy possible. After surgery, she will require more chemotherapy. This is just the beginning. There will be multiple rounds of testing to determine when to move on to the next step and even what the next step should be. During this time her immune system will be severely compromised, requiring her to remain in quarantine.
Sylvia's financial situation is dire. As an essential worker in a high cost of living state, she was not able to build savings to cover even her basic living expenses for more than a month, let alone the many expenses related to cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Money for basic living expenses ranging from housing expenses to transportation to insurances is needed immediately. Financial help is also needed for medical supplies, vital nutritional support, co-payments and prescriptions that are not covered by Sylvia's insurance.
Our goal amount supports one year of life. We believe with careful budgeting and utilizing available community resources whenever possible, we can help Sylvia through a year of treatment and recovery.
Robust financial support will give Sylvia and her family the means to make sure she has all that she needs for her fight. It will mean that she can focus all of her energy and efforts on caring for herself and making sure she is physically, mentally and emotionally ready for all of the challenges that come with fighting cancer.
