“Don't gain the world and lose your soul; wisdom is better than silver or gold.”
-Bob Marley
Our father, brother, son, and friend, Sylvester Stewart, (aka "Joey" or "Sly," to some), passed away too soon in his sleep at UC Davis Medical Center on New Year's Day, January 1, 2017 at about 12:40 am, after an exhausting battle with esophagus cancer at the young age of 61.
Joey was born and raised on February 19, 1955 in Vallejo, CA to his mom, Rose. The oldest of all the boys in the family, he was an optimistic and humble man who traveled the world - from Germany, where he raised his family and served in the United States ARMY, to Holland, France, and Denmark - all while appreciating the simple joys of life. He spent his last years living back home in Vallejo, close to his family and friends.
His favorite passion, as you might guess, was his music as he loved playing a wide range of musical instruments, recording and performing songs, and listening to various genres of music, from jazz to Rock’N’Roll to reggae, and salsa/world music. Those who knew him closely, know too, that he was a big fan of NPR, keeping up on the latest world happenings, and recently became a big fan of the Black Eagle, Joe Madison, on SiriusXM radio.
Joey joins in heaven his late son, Marlon, who passed away in 2004; his father; and all other loved ones who have passed before him.
He leaves behind his mother Rose; his children: Sly, Leona, and Josh; sisters Angelina and Nikki; and brother’s Ajamu, Shawn, Alex, Larry, and Al, as well as many nieces and nephews, and friends from all corners of the world.
He was loved by many and we’ll always miss his sense of humor and optimism.
Funeral services have not been arranged, but will be hosted in his hometown of Vallejo, California. All funds raised will go to his children, Sly, Joshua, and Leona, to help pay for his funeral expenses.
