As many of you reading might now know our friend Sydney, just 26 years old, has recently been diagnosed with stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma, due to a genetic mutation that the family was unaware of. This diagnosis has altered her life, we are hoping to support Sydney through this unexpected journey.
A few months ago, Sydney discovered a lump in her breast. Despite being told by doctors that it was “99.9% likely to be nothing,” she trusted her gut and pushed for more testing. Her persistence led to a diagnosis of breast cancer in her right breast. Because of her courage and intuition, Sydney is now preparing to undergo a double mastectomy, and potentially chemotherapy and radiation as part of her treatment.
She has also been referred to a fertility clinic, something no one in their twenties expects to navigate so suddenly.
Through it all, Sydney has shown incredible strength. Although this has been an unexpected speed bump in Sydneys life she has shown bravery and positivity, choosing to share her story publicly in hopes of encouraging other women to trust their instincts and advocate for their health.
As she faces a long road of surgery, recovery, and treatment, we are rallying around her to provide financial support. Sydney will be unable to work during this time, and will only be receiving 55% of her wage. Currently Sydney lives alone with the company of her dog Bear and cat Bailey, and bares full responsibility for covering her rent and bills. Along with this, the costs of traveling between Vancouver and Kelowna for appointments and surgeries are already adding up. We're raising funds to help cover:
- Out-of-pocket fertility preservation & treatment
- Travel expenses
- Rent and basic living costs while she's off work recovering
Sydney is the kind of friend who shows up with love, positivity, and humour that can make anyone laugh. She’s happiest spending time outside with her dog Bear, laughing with friends and family, and being warmhearted with anyone who has the pleasure of meeting her. Additionally, Sydney loves coaching U10 ringette as well as playing in an adult league. Sydney has always shown up as an extremely compassionate person towards others. Sydney worked at BC Cancer for 4.5 years, working with others that have been affected by cancer. Her time there is a testament to how kindhearted and thoughtful she is through the way she cared for other’s wellbeing.
Now it’s our turn to show up for her.
If you’re able, any amount helps. Whether it's $5, $50, or simply sharing this page, your support will help ease some of the burden Sydney is carrying and allow her to focus fully on healing.
