Sydney's Academic Dream Needs Your Support

Donation protected
My name is Sydney McLean, and I’m a proud Delaware native, a Hodgson Vo-Tech graduate, and a passionate community advocate dedicated to making a difference. You may know me from my volunteer work, singing in church, advocacy days at Legislative Hall—or you may not know me at all. Either way, I’m grateful you're here and reading my story.

I am a graduate of Hodgson Vo-Tech High School, where I maintained a 3.0 GPA and was recognized by my peers as “Most School Spirit” and “Most Likely to Succeed.” From an early age, I was raised in a faith-based environment that instilled in me a commitment to community service, justice, and advocacy. That calling led me to Widener University

When I followed my calling to Widener University, majoring in Political Science with minors in Criminal Justice and Legal Studies & Analysis. I earned honors my first semester, served as a Student Government Association Senator, and became an active campus leader. Beyond school, I serve as President of the NAACP Delaware State Conference Youth and College Division, a charter member of Students Demand Action for the state of Delaware chapter, and Director of Communications for Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Delaware.

Unfortunately, my academic journey was interrupted by systemic and financial barriers. Due to a delay in the processing of my FAFSA—through no fault of my own—Widener did not receive my financial information until months after it was due. By the time it was processed, I received a bill for $15,000 just one week before I was supposed to register for spring classes. I was given only three weeks to come up with the money or risk not returning to school.

Despite applying for every loan available, both in my name and my parents’, I was denied across the board. The only aid I received was a $5,000 federal loan, split in half between semesters, which barely made a dent in my tuition. Ultimately, I was forced to withdraw for the spring semester—despite being a successful, driven student with a clear vision for my future.

While I continue my education at my local community college I'm humbly asking for your support—whether through donations, mentorship, or simply sharing my story. Your generosity can help me return to my dream school and continue the work I’m so passionate about.
Thank you for believing in me.
