From the day Franco entered this world he has fought battles that most of us can't even imagine. After multiple hospital stays, countless specialist and a whole lot of pain, this happy little baby was formally diagnosed with Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome(CCHS) and Hirschsprung's disease. CCHS is a multi system disorder of the central nervous system where, most dramatically, the automatic control of breathing is absent or impaired. A CCHS patients respiratory response to low blood oxygen saturation(hypoxia) or to CO2 retention(hypercapnia) is sluggish during awake hours and absent to varying degrees during sleep, serious illness, and/or stress.
Hirschsprung disease is a blockage of the large intestine due to improper muscle movement in the bowel. It is a congenital condition which means it is present from birth. The combination of both diseases is known as Haddad Syndrome. CCHS is a life-long extremely rare breathing disorder. Because Franco didn't have enough air into his lungs a surgical procedure known as tracheotomy was performed. And because his colon was not functioning properly an ileostomy surgery was also performed. These are one of many operations that Franco has gone through.
He will always require artificial ventilation, a lot of supportive care and a multidisciplinary approach to improve his quality of life.
As you can begin to imagine this unforeseen situation has put much financial stress on the family and many alterations need to be made in order to accommodate Franco's needs.
