On Febuary 17th Don Vassallo was competing in
a company BBQ cookoff (in which his delicious *ribs earned 2nd place!). While cooking, Don slipped and fell off the trailer and hit the ground hard. He reported to friends and the company nurse that he believed he had cracked some ribs as well as banging up his right arm and leg. Don was very sore but getting around gingerly. he took the next 2 days off work to recover. Over those 2 days, the pain only worsened especially in his neck.
Outside his home 3 days later, Don was with a friend when he suddenly collapased and could not move his arms or legs. He was taken by ambulance to the local hospital and immediately transferred to Clear Lake Regional Hospital where doctors diagnosed a bruised spinal cord which would necessitate the need for immediate surgery to fuse the 5th, 6th, and 7th vertebrae to prevent further damage. Surgery was performed on Feb. 22nd. Don required a Tracheotomy to ensure he could breath as well as a gastronomy feeding tube. Following the operation, could not speak or move any limbs for several days.
Many of you know Don as a jovial good guy who is a friend to all! He excels at working and playing with people from all walks of life. Though he is in good spirits and regularly joking with the hospital staff, Don hates relying on others for help.
Through his strength and perserverance, Don began his recovery by moving his toes, then legs. He is mind was clear and he eventually was able to have the tracheotomy removed and is able to fully speak again. He is now moving his legs well and starting to regain some movement in his arms.
We are hoping for a full recovery eventually but Don will likely need months of rehab and treatment. It is unlikely that Don will be able to return to his job in its current capacity and he will be accruing significant financial responsibilites. Please consider supporting this incredible friend, as we know he has always been one of the first to offer help to others in need.
