Help Keep Ângelo in a Safe School

Donation protected
Dear friends, (PARA LER EM PORTUGUÊS VEJA EM BAIXO)

I hope this request finds you safe and well. Most of us have been social distancing now for the past 2 months or more. This time of isolation has affected many of us differently. For me it has given lots of extra family time and the opportunity to reflect on life. I have been a bit more grateful for the things that I do have. Yes, I am in isolation, the present and future are a bit scary, but at the very least, I do have my immediate family right here next to me.

The story of my friend, Leilane, is different. She came here to Portugal to seek a better life for Angelo, her 13-year-old son, and had to leave him behind at a boarding school in Brazil. It was supposed to be a tempory arrangement until she could get his paperwork situated to move to Portugal. The COVID-19 pandemic has delayed that plan. It has also caused her to lose her job. She is stuck here in isolation and furthest from the person she loves most. She is also in financial crisis, wondering how she will be able to pay his boarding school bill now that she does not have a job. She has no extended family to call on and her worst fear is that her son will no longer be able to stay at his school that he loves and where he remains safe. Leilane fears he is in danger of going to the Public Shelter, living with adolescent offenders and children taken back from families that exposed them to drug abuse and other legal issues if she cannot keep him in his current school. I cannot imagine her worry and the painful longing to be with her son again, and not knowing when this can be. When I speak with her, her biggest worry is her son´s wellbeing. To help relieve just a little bit of these worries, I am doing a fundraiser to help pay for her son´s schooling. Please consider a donation of any amount, the relief it will provide to Leilane and her family is beyond measurable.

The fundraising site gofundme, does not have the option to transfer money to Brazil. This fundraiser is set up to go directly to Leilane´s bank account in Portugal where she can then transfer the money to the school. If you would like to donate directly to his school with receipt, please contact me.

The Boarding School and Costs

Adventist boarding school, IAESC, located in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, they are still running classes. Some students have opted to return home with their families and others remain at the school with a few teachers that have stayed behind. For those teachers who have opted to be at home with their families, their courses are still provided through video calls. Leilane´s son, Angelo, remains at the school.

His school bill is as follows:

Cost for schooling, room and board is 262 Euros or $300 (1650 REAIS) per month, the school year runs through the month of December, this yields a cost of 2,096 Euros or $2,400 (12,800 Reais) until the end of the year. (Please note that currency exchange rates are always changing. This was the exchange as of 05/05/2020)

He also sees a psychologist and has a monthly bill of 64 Euros or $75(400 REAIS). Until the end of the year, the cost for this is 512 Euros or $600.

The cost of his school plus the psychologist yield 2,608 Euros or $3000.

About the school

For more information about his school I have attached the school website: https://iaesc.educacaoadventista.org.br/

As this site is in Portuguese, I have requested information from the school in English. The following was sent to me from the Director, Reginaldo Oliveira:

The Adventist Teaching Institute of Santa Catarina is a boarding school with about 340 students between the ages of 13 and 18 to study middle school and high school.

We also offer an external elementary regime for children from the age of 3 with a bilingual education system program. Portuguese and English. For High School, we offer American High School in partnership with Griggs International from Andrews University and Berrien Springs Michigan.

We have a very diversified extra activities structure for students such as, Musical conservatory with orchestra, wind instrument band, martial band, choirs and vocal groups. In the sports arena we have heated pools, a multi-sports gym and an exercising gym.

We have a specific spiritual program for our students with profound biblical messages for their age group every weekend, in addition to the morning and evening devotionals where we teach Christian principles and values. Our disciplinary system is also very traditional but in an environment of friendship and respect where each student is valued and motivated to be better.

Our academic program has brought excellent results to our students, directing them to the best institutions of higher education.

We’re at their disposal to do the best in preparing children and youth for society.”

More about Ângelo:

Here are what Ângelo´s teachers have to say about him:

Biology teacher: “Good student, well centered, does everything he asks in class, very calm.”

Math teacher: “Very good boy.”

Pedagogical coordinate: “A young man of gold.”

Pedagogical Advisor: “Just compliments.

Art teacher: “Very polite and shows great behavior.

Portuguese teacher: “Has good behavior, attentive, polite and fulfills his school duties.”

Director for Student Affairs: “We as educators are very happy to have students in this profile, committed and dedicated.”

Also, here is a letter from Ângelo (translated from Portuguese):

My name is Ângelo Ferreira, I am 13 years old and a Seventh-day Adventist in the 8th grade at IAESC.

I came to study at this boarding school, my mother and step father decided to go outside of Brazil to Portugal to work so that we could have a better life. I came to study here (at IAESC) as it is a good school, it is safe and in communion with God, until my mother gets situated and I can go and live with her.

Outside of my studies I also participate in sports, my favorite is basketball.

I have made many friends. In Sabbath school, I am the director of music. I play guitar in moments of praise and participate in open choir. I am relatively shy, but I like to push myself.

It is not easy to be far away from my mother, I miss her a lot. However, I understand that God has a purpose and He is in control. For this, I would like to finish my year here at this school.

Sincerely,

Ângelo Ferreira

Ângelo with his mom, Leilane.

EM PORTUGUÊS

Caros amigos,
