Students for Workers' Rights, a coalition of students that amplify and support the demands of service workers at Stanford, is launching our final fundraiser. We're so grateful to the Stanford community for helping us raise nearly $300,000 for laid-off workers over the past few months.
Last week we learned that sixty Row staff, most of whom have worked at Stanford for many years, will be laid off for the coming year. As they are only receiving four weeks of severance, we are hoping to ease the financial stress of the moment.
We are currently operating a grant system. Those in need of resources can reach out for support and we try to meet that need within the limits of our fund. With so many new lay-offs, our support fund is running low -- we need your help to keep operating through the summer. We have set a goal of $30,000 because this will allow us to distribute at least $500 to every laid-off Row worker who requests it.
The demands of rent, food, healthcare, and childcare are immediate. People are hurting now as they try to protect their families from the uncertainty of this pandemic. That's why we're asking for your help in caring for the same people who have cared for Stanford students for years and years. This campus wouldn't be home without them.
