Swimming for Courage: Supporting Charlotte & Derek in Their Battles with Cancer
Meet Derek (Newfield, NY)
Derek lives with his wife Stephanie and their 3-year-old son in Newfield, just outside Ithaca. Days before his son was born, Derek received a diagnosis of grade 4 glioblastoma—the same form of brain cancer that took my cousin. He underwent emergency surgery and has spent the past three years undergoing intense treatments, all while running his own business to support his family.
Recently, scans have shown signs of possible new tumor activity. Derek continues treatment as they learn more—and he continues to fight with incredible resilience.
Meet Charlotte (Farmington, NY)
Charlotte is a 14-year-old from Farmington, just outside Canandaigua, who was recently diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of pediatric thyroid cancer. She had a total thyroidectomy and central and bilateral neck dissection to remove 65 lymph nodes which removed metastatic tumors.
Despite everything, Charlotte remains active in sports and dreams of becoming a marine biologist one day. Her strength, optimism, and determination are truly inspiring.
Why I’m Doing This
This swim is more than just a physical challenge—it’s a symbol of courage, community, and care. My cousin Julian - who we lost to brain cancer, gave me the gift of bravery, and I want to pay it forward by helping these two families shoulder the financial burden of treatment, lost income, and day-to-day expenses so they can focus on healing.
All funds raised will be evenly split between Charlotte’s and Derek’s families, ensuring each household receives the support they need.
Any and all donations make a difference.
If you can give—thank you.
If you can share—thank you.
Every bit helps, and every act of support makes a real difference.
With gratitude,
