Let me tell you a little about my friends Joy and Stephen. I first met Stephen when I was 18 years old, and we both did bar work at the Sydney Cricket Ground. From there, we kept crossing paths through our TV jobs, and always stayed in touch. Then he and his awesome wife Joy won the Greencard Lottery... and came and joined me out here in LA.
Since being here, Joy and Stephen loaned me money to help me get a secured credit card, so I could build my credit score. They were the first two people to come to the ER when I had no one to call, they were there within 10 mins. They then PAID my hospital bill as I couldn't afford the funds in full up front. No hesitation whatsoever. They continually paid for dinners for me when I met up. They have always been two of the most generous, kind and selfless people I've ever known.
A little over a month ago, one of my most amazing friends, Joy, was diagnosed with incurable, inoperable Stage 4 gastric cancer. She is only 34 years old. She and Stephen had to emergency move back home to Australia, to get both the correct diagnosis, and the "treatment" which for Joy, is to help her quality of life. She's undergoing Chemo, and all the while she still has the most amazing sense of humor, spirit, and is consistently comforting EVERYONE else. She's beyond incredible.
Sometimes we feel so helpless to help the people who never ask for help, but deserve it the most.
In two weeks time I will be completing the Waikiki Roughwater Swim, a 2.4 mile ocean race across Waikiki Beach. I want to make this my Swim For Joy. I want to complete this in a good time, and dedicate the entire swim for her.
Joy and Stephen have so much support, but getting through this time takes a ridiculous amount of money. I'm hoping to help raise some funds to help them through this time, and asking if people could spare any change - $1, $2, $5, $10 - literally whatever, to sponsor me for this raise and donate to their cause. If you can live without one coffee order a day and help them... it would be tremendous.
I just want to give back to the people who have always stepped up for everyone else.
