December 13, 2015

Bless your heart. I wish you a lovely and peaceful holiday season. I am writing to you because I have had a rough year and I need your kind help

On June 26 I had a minor stroke. The VA did some tests and determined that the left side of my heart is enlarged. A friend joked with me and said I already had a big heart by all of the volunteer work I have done especially to help veterans. Also for the work I have done as a Chaplain’s Assistant at EisenhowerMedical Center.

An MRI revealed “chronic changes” to my brain. In October I had surgery to remove my gallbladder. I wonder what will go wrong next.

At the same time the Desert AIDS Project (DAP) reduced my care giver hours by 33% due to budget cuts. My two room mates lost their jobs and stopped paying me some rent. These two room mates have taken very good care of me and have been care givers to me during my recovery. But because they are unemployed I have to feed them. I consider feeding them as a way of saying thanks for their support while I often go to the VA Hospital.

My refrigerator does not work so subsequently I lost a lot of food. Southern California Edison told me I am not eligible for their program because my refrigerator is newer than 1998. I have a water leak that is damaging the carpet and floor of my bedroom. It is going to be a bleak Christmas at my house.

I have fixed income from Social Security and the Navy. This loss of rental income on top of the added expenses has put me in a bad predicament. My homeowner’s insurance will be canceled December 24. I am eligible for food from Well in the Desert but I am blind and cannot drive a car. Well in the Desert has no delivery service to Rancho Mirage. The DAP gave me $50 for groceries two months ago but they cannot help me this month.
Fortunately Sacred Heart Church paid my electric bill for me. David Roth who was the Democratic nominee for Congress in 2006 donated to my “Survival Fund.”

I am asking that you please pray for me. My goal is to have a complete recovery. The VA doctors say that stress is the main reason why I had a minor stroke. My financial problems add to my stress. Could you please donate $25 to my survival? I feel that brighter days are ahead of me and I intend to repay you in the future.

I know Christmas is the season of giving and I believe in miracles. I have hope because I know God and my dear friends will never abandon me. So I hope you can please help me. If you cannot make a donation please know that I sincerely appreciate your thoughtful prayers.

God Bless,

Tom
