Sweetwyne and the National Boards

I'm unabashedly raising money to support my own professional advancement. I am applying for National Board Certification.

The National Boards offer the highest level of certification that a teacher can receive in the U.S. To earn the certification means that the applicant is a Master Teacher in their field, and the process is rigorous.

There are 4 components to the National Boards. Three are portfolio entries with extensive analytical writing. The fourth is a standardized test that is adminstered in a secure, certified location. Each component costs $475.00. That comes to a total of $1,900.00 that I must pay out-of-pocket. The additional $100 I hope to raise would help me pay for the hotel room I would need to book to take the standardized test, as the closest approved testing facility is almost 150 miles from my home.

I must raise this money by January, and to be honest, I do not make enough as a teacher to comfortably sacrifice that amount in one chunk. The irony is that if I am able to pass the Boards, then I would make the highest possible salary a teacher could make, no matter what state I choose to teach in. If I pass the Boards, I could afford to apply to the Boards.

I am unabashed for several reasons. If  you know me, you know what it cost me to get here. You also know how hard I work. I have put myself through college and a graduate program, and I have earned Highly Effective ratings through the New Mexico teacher evaluation system. My students routinely make growth. One year, my student growth was so high that out of 50 possible points to earn for my evaluation, I earned 49.7, 3 tenths of a point from a perfect score.

I'm asking for your money because I believe I am a good investment. There is no guarantee that I will pass the Boards on my first try, but there's a fair chance. You can certainly donate knowing that I would give it my very best shot, and that does mean something. And I cannot fully express what it would mean to me to achieve it. It must suffice to say that for a kid who was raised by a single mom in a trailer on the rez, who first left home to get her education at age 13 across the country from everyone and everything she knew and loved, to finally reach the point that she doesn't have to live from paycheck to paycheck regardless of how hard she works, would mean the world.

Please, and advance gratitude,
Masika
