Sweet Ody Needs Surgery for a Fractured Leg
Spende geschützt
I went for a run in my neighborhood on Monday afternoon and ran into this sweet boy, limping with a wound on his left hind leg. I was able to grab him & carry him home immediately calling our vet (East Riverside Veterinary Hospital) to get him in to be evaluated Tuesday morning.
His appt went well, we decided to foot the bill to have him sedated, get the wound cleaned up, do xrays to investigate if there was more to the limp, and have him neutered so everything could be handled at one time. That evening, when they were able to get the procedures completed, they called to say everything went well but the xrays revealed some sad news: his femur was fractured. Had been for likely a month or so now as it has been trying to "heal" but not properly due to the severity of the fracture and where it's at in the healing process, "fixing" it is going to be difficult so a specialist (ortho surgeon) would be required OR amputation could be done.
We're working on making calls this week to the suggested contacts and will keep the page updated with what we end up pursuing in case direct donations to the vet is preferred but this is likely going to be a pricey road.
We didn't intend to keep this sweet boy long-term and are reaching out to rescues in the area to see if anyone is willing to take him in and bear this next major cost but we're also up against a time crunch as our vet suggested to wait no more than 2 weeks to make a move due to the pain he's in until that point. We've gotten him pain medication to mitigate the pain concerns. We've got him his rabies shot & blood testing done to ensure he's got a clean bill of health in other regards (he does! ) and we are giving him deworming & flea meds as he's ALSO got both tapeworms and fleas! We want the best for him, truly, it's just becoming quite the financial burden.
He's truly the sweetest boy and through carrying him a block away, giving him a bath to clean his wound up, giving him medicine, he's not even so much as tried to scratch or fight. Our kids (9 & 8) have come to visit him too and he's just eaten up any pets and scratches he can get. They've taken to calling him Ody (we're in the throes of an Epic the musical obsession!)
Any little bit would help. Our vet did a quick, general quote of roughly $1200 to amputate. Consultations, if we have to go that route, will likely be an additional cost and I'm not sure orthopedic solution costs yet (will continue to update for that as well). I've set the cost for what we've spent so far on his care. Though I know it's a gamble, if we find a rescue willing to step in we will gladly refund any donations as we're not trying to take from anyone if we don't need to, we just are looking for help to offset costs if we dont hear back in time from an organization since it's looking like another $900.
Thank you!
