SWEET GUS

Donation protected
Gus is our 18 month old great dane. He is the sweetest boy, we have ever had.  He loves everyone and all pets. He does not have a mean bone in his body. And everyone who has met our sweet boy has fallen in love with him.
When we got Gus at 8 weeks, he was so shy and very clumbsy. Well he grew out of his shyness but his clumsiness continued as he got older. His legs are so long that when he runs he looks like a giraffe, he would turn to fast and tip over, like how most puppies do. We have one step coming into the house from the garage and he would put his feet up on the step and turn around and look at me like give me a lift. I carried him up and down our steps going up to the second floor for almost 2 months, and then had to show him how to come up and down them, because he was to big to carry. He never came straight up, he did a zig zag pattern and that was ok with me, as long as he could sleep with me upstairs.  Gus also took a long time to learn how to get in the car, he would put his feet on the seat and then turn and look at me like mom, I need a lift. After a while he learned how to jump in on his own. He loves to go in the car, and I take him in several stores, and assisted living homes. and people just flock to him, because he is a gentle giant, and a very kind soul.
Gus is now 18 months old, I started noticing him swinging his back legs out when he was walking. I thought it was kind of odd, it didn't seem to bother him so I just kept an eye on it. He was still doing the steps, getting up & down on & off the beds. No problem getting up when he was sitting or resting. Never cried.  First part of January he would not do the steps. I figured it was because I had put some boxes close to the steps that I was going to take out to the garbage.  Gus likes things the way they are supposed to be and these boxes were in his way, when they really were not, but I moved them anyways thinking he would go up the stairs. He didn't want anything to do with the steps. Now I was concerned I called our vet and I took him in and they did xrays on his hips and back legs. Xrays came back great, happy with that news but what was causing him not to come upstairs.  Our vet put him on some pain pills and had me come back in a few days later to talk. Oh Dear God did they see something new on the xray, am I going to get horrible news. The Dr comes in and talks for a few minutes then I hear the word wobblers.  My heart sinks thinking oh Dear God, this can't be happening to our sweet boy. Dr suggested that I take him for a consultation with a neurological specialist and have them do a MRI.  At Med vets in Worthington Ohio. Dr K watched his walk and had a good idea that it was wobblers,  Gus had started knuckling over on his front paws, and was falling more. The Dr K told us that he would have to be put under for the MRI and if it showed what he expected then he would go straight into surgery for a Dorsal laminectomy to get the pressure off his spine. The consultation was on Tuesday he spent the night, had the MRI on Wednesday and the Dr called and said it was worse then he thought and that he would be going into surgery.  I got on Facebook asked for prayers for our sweet Gus that he was going to have surgery.  Several hours passed and I finally get the call from the Dr. He said it was really bad and he really had to push on his spine, in his next breath he said now we wait and we will know if he is paralyzed by morning.  I called Gus nurse in the icu about 4 hours after the surgery to see how he was doing. She said he sat up and was looking at her, oh my God our prayers were answered, our Gus is going to be ok. I called back later and they said they had him up and walking, I had tears of joy in my eyes, told my husband the great news and we were both over the moon excited.  I called Thursday several times to check on Gus and they said he had been outside with two girls assisting him when he walked, and said he was eating good. Talked to the Dr and he said since he had to push on his spine so much that he should stay another day. I called Friday and they said Gus really showed no interest in getting up, 2 girls got him up and said he was knuckling over when walking. My heart is breaking thinking what is going on. I talked to his nurse Friday night and told her that we might be bringing Gus home Saturday if everything was ok. She said it was taking 2 girls to try to get him up, but he really didn't want to walk. Dr K called me this morning and said that it would not be a good idea for him to come home, I asked if it was ok if I came to visit and he said yes. My friend and I drove an hour and a half to go see my sweet boy. When we got in his room he was just laying in his crate not able to get up. I couldn't stop crying and felt so bad for Gus. They tried to sit him up but he couldn't and I told him to just let him lay where he was. I got down on the floor and was talking to my baby boy, he wanted to get up, but he couldn't.  I got to feed him and then asked them if I could have some ice, he loves ice. She got me a big cube and I held it while he was trying to pull it out of my hand, we didn't want him to swallow it whole so I held it in my hand while he was licking it.I just laid in front of him talking to him and giving him lots of kisses. The look in his eyes was killing me. Like mom where have you been and what is wrong with me. I didn't want to leave him and I know he didn't want me to leave. The nurses were all very nice and I knew he was in good hands.
We had a great dane named Seamus he was 21 month old and had to go in for exploritory surgery because he had stopped eating, and we thought he may have eaten another rock. Seamus made it through the surgery and they were just getting ready to call me to say they didn't find anything.  Seamus stopped breathing the vet called me and told they were trying to revive Seamus, I couldn't believe this they called me back and told me he was gone. Our hearts were broken, Seamus was an amazing dog and we loved him so much. Seamus passed on August 23 and we got Gus September 8th 2017. I tend to get a dog right after one passes and that is how I have always been. When we got Gus we knew he was something very special and he has brought us so much joy and love and makes us laugh daily. Gus is very close to our 9yr old lab Quinn during the day they sleep on the couch together and usually where ever one is the other is not very far. We also have Ireland another great dane who will be 2 soon and she misses Gus like crazy. Ireland is a little to rough with Gus and Quinn so we can't put them out together when they go out to play. We also have my parents 2 shelties Charlie & Ben, they will be 12 in April my parents passed in less then 2 years of each other and I was the only one who would take them. Mom always called them her guardian angels. My sister takes care of of the financial part for them because I couldn't afford to. I want to bring Gus home so bad but the Dr knows what my home situation is. My husband had a massive stroke 16 years ago. It took his right side and his speech. After several months of therapy he is able to walk from his wheel chair to his recliner, but is unable to use his right arm, and he can say some words now. The Dr's know since my husband can't help me lift our 110 lb Gus that there is no way I can do that on my own. The Dr wants Gus to start therapy early next week to see if they can get him to stand and walk with little assistance and then I will be able to bring him home. Our bill for the mri, surgery and stay is already close to 5 thousand dollars. I cannot afford to pay for all the therapy that he is going to need to be able to come home. This is why we are doing go fund me so Gus can get the proper amount of therapy. We understand if you can't donate,  but we would like to ask everyone to please pray for our Gus, that he will be able to walk again. The Dr did his job and now it is in God's hands and Gus paws. Thank you for reading about our sweet boy Gus
