On January 21, 2022, My Son in Law, Shannon Sweeney a husband and father of 3, was diagnosed with ALS. Our family is experiencing a battle I never thought we would have to face. If anyone is familiar with the uncertainty and poor prognosis ALS brings of No cure or reliable treatment you can only imagine the anxiety & stress we are experiencing. It’s a relentless progressive disease that takes away a persons independence to speak, eat, walk or breathe for themselves bit by bit. The medical expenses can be overwhelming at times, seems to never end and increasing month by month. Shannon has had a feeding tube placed in Sept 2022, and now as of April 2023 this is how he receives 95% of his nutrition. He has lost his ability to chew and swallow solid foods safely. His speech, voice is getting less and less each day and his breathing capacity continues to decline. From what we know about this devastating disease, his mobility will eventually become an issue. He currently requires a bipap machine at night to breathe, additional medical equipment to clear his secretions. We have his formula for his nutrition delivered monthly along with all of the medical supplies needed for tube feedings. He also is on many added supplements to help him stay strong and in hopes to slow down disease progression. Insurance does not cover any added supplements and just a portion of the monthly cost of renting his machines. Looking ahead we know that navigating through his home will become a challenge for him. We are working on renovating his home to have a bedroom and handicap accessible bathroom on one floor, along with a backup generator to maintain power for his necessary equipment.
So, we are asking for any help that can be extended to my son in law and his family; it would be graciously appreciated and will help a lot with his care and costs.
Thank You All Very Much!!!
