SAVE OUR SCHOOL

We are a group of 4 women here in Australia, Elizabeth Weymouth (Business Accounts Manager), Kim Priest (School Counsellor), Sara Cullen (Case Manager in Drug and Rehabilitation) and Anne Page (Registered Nurse/Midwife) who are seeking to raise funds to help rebuild a condemned school in Ha’apai Village, Solomon Islands.  We are strongly connected to the village through family and friends.

In recent times members of our local community, and family, have embarked on the journey to Ha’apai Village to witness first hand the beauty and challenges faced by the villagers.  We donated much needed resources to the school (books, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, exercise books and water tank), spending time with the local children and teachers and learning of their need for a new school.  We were touched by the villages and their plight to educate this isolated community.  We felt we are in a real position to help them and understand how hard it is for them to achieve this on their own.

The project is of great importance not only for the community but over the years, schools in Roviana Lagoon have closed down and now Ha’apai Primary School is the only school left operating. It serves at least 6 communities and is now under threat of being closed down as it is deemed unsafe by the the Education Ministry.

The school has 78 students (37 boys and 41 girls) and two teachers. The school is located in Roviana Lagoon, Western Province, Solomon Islands. The school was built in 1988 and is badly damaged from termites and earthquake activity. So…we need a little hand to help this community of approx. 204 people, who have few means to make money.

The community have already started a local fundraising campaign and have begun milling local timber and they need help to finish the school. All donations will go to building materials and the transportation of them. Materials include – timber, roofing iron, nails and concrete. There is no electricity and all materials are transported by boats and carried by the villagers up a hill which is very labour intensive. The funds will also help with building a staff house for the teachers, toilets, and school furniture.

It is estimated that the whole project will cost $44,000 and we are looking to raise whatever funds we can to assist the village. The villagers have appealed to other associations, as the government of Solomon Islands is unable to assist. Please join us to contribute to this worthwhile cause.

We are in close communication with the core group of Ha'apai School Fundraising members and are eager to see the project through. We are keen to keep you regularly updated on the progress of the school project and in celebrating the opening of a new school building.

The wider picture is that villagers are impacted by, logging, overfishing and more recently exploratory mining leading to exploitation of natural resources.  Education will provide knowledge such as the effects of deforestation on the river systems and reefs and how this impacts on food stocks and their environment.  The lagoon is also an important fish nursery for the world stocks of threatened species such as the Maori Wrasse and Hump-headed Parrot Fish.

Through education children have a chance to be empowered and liberated and we hope education can be a vehicle of change for a better future.

Every contribution is important and valued by the community.  We thank you for your donations in helping us save our school. On behalf of the children of Ha’apai village we thank you in advance.
