Help Doug Fight Cancer

Donation protected
Right now, setting up this account is the best way I can think of to help my 55 year-old son-in-law, Doug Kling.

In September, 2014, Doug began having seizures; after three weeks of thinking it was just muscle spasms and trying to tough it out, Doug realized the seizures  were getting worse.  His trip to the doctor became a trip to the ER, admittance to the hospital.  At the end of a week, after a battery of tests, Doug had a definite diagnosis:  3 brain tumors and lung cancer.  The lung cancer would have been Stage II, but the brain tumors bumped everything up to a Stage IV.

This guy has such a low key, gentle disposition;  I have never in 27 years that he has been married to my oldest daughter, Sonja, heard Doug utter a negative or critical statement about anyone -- he has unlimited patience.

Doug's passions are spectator sports of any kind and golf, which he was able to afford at times in the past.  When Doug couldn't afford to play, he never complained.  He was always happy just to meet up with the guys either for a game or the comraderie afterward.

I could write a book about this fellow, but I won't .  My mission now is to get Doug some help with overflow medical expenses and a stunning $12,000 plumbing service bill.

The house is a 70's house -- nothing fancy, but it is a warm place -- a warm place that has an old sewage system.  For the past 8-10 years, Doug has had the main line cleaned out;  every year he has watched the camera that the plumber ran into the line show roots that were cleaned out, but also a hole that kept getting bigger.  A month ago, the verdict was that the line was going to cave in if not replaced soon.  The job included tearing up the street, so the cost was high.  Now the line has a lifetime guarantee.  Had to be done.

Doug has never asked for help in his life.  Over the past 10 years, like so many folks, he has taken more than one pay cut to keep his job;  he cut expenses and kept on going.  He has great friends and family, and he definitely knows how much they love and care about him, but he has refused to lean on them.  Now everything is somewhat different.

Doug and Sonja are not the only ones going through this kind of crisis;  there are thousands and thousands going through health crisis and getting bogged down in the insurance and financial merry-go-round.  Doug pays his own insurance and  changed insurance companies to try to get a lower deductible this year.  He and Sonja are still trying to get everything in place with that, meanwhile expenses keep growing.

Doug has been through one round of radiation and, by now, should have had tests to determine the effectiveness of those treatments.  So far, out-of-pocket expenses have been approximately $7,000.  We want to get Doug out of the waiting mode, even if we have to pay for the needed tests up-front.

After these tests, doctors are hoping to come up with the chemo that will work on the lung cancer.  The cells there are un-differentiated and until the cells are identified more specifically, doctors can't come up with the "cocktail" they think will be effective.

Anything that this appeal brings to help Doug will be so very much appreciated.... and not just financial help.  An overflow of prayers and positive thoughts will be valuable beyond belief.

Tomorrow, I have to leave to go to NC  where my dear sister, age 77, is facing her own struggle with Intra-cranial Para-nasal Sinus Cancer.  I hate to leave the kids right now, but will be back as soon as I can.

Our hearts go out to any and everyone who is facing difficulties of any kind.   Take as much care of yourself and your loved ones as you can and ..... always remember ....  take care of your good self.
