Our 17 year old son Spencer is a kind, respectful, caring young man who was a straight 'A' student getting ready to apply for university and start his independance away at school. Last November Spencer's world and ours fell apart when he fell roughly 100 ft.
Spencer suffered traumatic injuries leaving him unable to move and even breathe on his own for several weeks. We were unsure what his capabilities would be when and if he came to. It was 46 days before I even saw my son open his eyes.
We were told it was not likely he would ever walk again, speak or be independent.
But Spencer is a fighter!!!
After 13 weeks and 9 surgeries including removal of part of his skull to allow his brain the room it needed from swelling, he was moved into the ABI, (Acquired Brain Injury) Rehabilitation unit. With the help of his rehab team and the resources available on the unit, he is now saying some words and learning to walk again. He will soon be discharged from care and we will be taking him home. We are very excited about having him home with us but in order to continue his recovery, Spencer will require an environment modified for his current physical capabilities. This will include a chair lift for the stairs, a hospital bed, special mattress, wheelchair, house ramps, car ramps, etc.
Spencer will need 24 hour care as well as a strong and consisitent rehab team to continue his amazing progress. This will include rehabilitation therapy, physio therapy, speech therapy, and transportation to and from. Therapy services are quite costly. Because this was not a motor vehicle or work place accident funds are extremely limited for therapy.
Our fear is that with very limited funding for resources Spencer's recovery may stall and I know that there is much more fight left in Spencer.
His motivation and determination to get better is inspiring.
All donations will go towards Spencer's rehab equipment and recovery. Thank you all!
