My name is John Smith and I am fundraising for my wife Suzanne. During the past year she was diagnosed with 3 different types of cancer - uterine, kidney, and lung.
She had surgery for her uterine cancer in Orlando, FL which is 120 miles round trip from where we live and required us to get a hotel room for 2 nights. After we found out that she also has lung and kidney cancer we decided to go to the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL which is 150 miles round trip and we have been required to make 6 trips to Moffitt so far (3/6/24) and each required a stay of from 2 to 4 days since at 80, it is hard for be to make the drive down and back in the same day.
Her uterine cancer and kidney cancer are now behind us, but she is now going to have to start having radiation treatments 5 days a week for at least 3 weeks, followed by chemo and immune therapies. We are retired and I have a retirement but she only has Social Security. I have good insurance, but the 20% deductible and medication costs are eating us up, and the travel and lodging is not covered my the insurance's maximum out of pocket expense. She handles the finances but neither of us have any idea of what the total out of pocket expenses will be. I made the request of $100,000 but if it winds up looking like it is going to cost less, as soon as I find out I will stop the fund raiser as soon as we recover the expenses, if we can actually get that amount!! Asking for help is the hardest thing that I have ever had to do, but Suzanne is worrying herself sick over our money situation and with everything else she has to worry about, I had to eat my pride and try this out!
