Hello, My name is Kyle Galkin. I am fundraising for my non-profit, SustainSD!
We will be building and maintaining gardens and composts at schools throughout San Diego Unified School District.
Our goals are to mitigate food waste, provide sustainability education for children, and improve soil quality in our region.
Composting is the process by which organic matter such as food is broken down by microorganisms, insects, or worms into a nutrient dense soil. The process of composting takes roughly 6-10 weeks with little labor involved. We will be accepting food scraps from the cafeteria as well as scraps brought in by the students. A new compost pile will be built weekly to ensure that there is a constant flow of compost being created.
Once the composting process is complete, we will sow it into the gardens that we will build at schools. Whatever is left over will go back to the families of students for their personal use. In the gardens, we plan to grow fruits and vegetables that will be offered in the salad bar during lunch, bringing the farm closer to home. We would like to create a closed loop system in which nothing is wasted and everything has a purpose.
We are seeking funding to obtain materials, advertisement, and labor to create this passion project.
If you cannot afford to donate, a share means just as much to us!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
