Sustainable Water for Urualla, Nigeria

Hello, my name is Matthew and I'm part of Saint Vincent de Paul Society, a worldwide charitable organization. Our chapter is based out of St Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church in Dedham, Massachusetts. We are a group of young adults raising donations for a meaningful cause put together by our friend Sister Jospehine.

Sister Josephine grew up in a South Nigerian village by the name of Urualla. She has revealed to us the severe scarcity of water in Urualla. During the dry season villagers have to walk in excess of five miles in order to acquire freshwater and run the risk of being kidnapped by a local terrorist group named Boko Haram. In addition, due to the risks posed by Boko Haram children cannot safely fetch water at night and are forced to choose between attending school and acquiring water.

Our goal is to provide sustainable water for Urualla. We plan to accomplish this by boring a well and using solar energy as a sustainable source of energy to draw the water out of the well. Our friends Sister Josephine and Lew have been working on a plan to put this in action over the past year and have been in close contact with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society chapter of Urualla. They have identified a trustworthy local contractor based out of Nigeria who has given us an estimate of roughly $27,000 to build the well. We are also partnering with the Catholic diocese of Orlu to resource and account for the materials and funds needed to complete this project, with the added bonus of avoiding sending money through potentially corrupt government officials.

While we are aiming to build this well, we don't want to stop there. Down the road we pray to be able to build wells in the surrounding villages as well. With your help we can make a life changing impact that could last generations on the families of Southern Nigeria that are suffering so acutely.

On the cross Jesus said, "I thirst" (John 19:28); so do the men, women and children of Urualla.
