I already produce my range of hand dyed yarns using waste materials from the local Loch Ness cafes and woodlands. I redirect food waste and invasive species into the dye pots to create all your beautiful colours.
However there is still room for improvement!
With this fund I plan to take the entire process off grid by installing solar panels and a closed water recycling system.
Textiles has been highlighted as one of the most polluting industries on the planet, and dyeing is one of the worst parts of that. The process of using heat and water consumes vast amounts of energy and clean water, even when using sustainable materials as I do.
Water use is a major problem across the globe, and although I already dye in a way that does not pollute the water I can do better!
By creating a closed water recycling system I can remove my business from the current system. Did you know that every drop of water that comes out of a tap has been treated to the highest standards required for drinking? Regardless of if it is being poured into a glass, washing your dishes or flushing your toilet! That process takes, time, energy, space and chemicals. By removing myself from that system and creating a closed process I can reduce all of those things, and instead redirect my water into irrigation for more dye materials.
I'll be building this reuse filtration and irrigation system myself using repurposed materials wherever possible. I'll also be incorporating the methods into future courses so that I can continue to share my learning with others.
Thank you for your support!
