For me, it started with a pink peace sign missing a leg.
****
I met Susan 6 years ago when she and her wife, Elizabeth, were our neighbors. At that time, my husband and I were blindly navigating being full-time working parents with a newborn, to toddlerhood, then times two. She was a beacon for us during this time as new parents and beyond, developing a strong bond with our children through the assistance of childcare, and voluntarily keeping our house clean and orderly when she was caring for them.
So to find a chalk drawing of a pink (her least favorite color!) not quite peace sign plastered on my children’s playset was odd, but seeing the chalk not returned to its box was a cause for pause.
Things progressed, more signs appeared in mediums other than chalk, and eventually an MRI exposed a large brain tumor weaving its way into multiple parts of the brain. While the web it had woven made it surgically inoperable, Susan grabbed the reins of radiation and chemotherapy on her determined ride to tumor annihilation.
Through the ride, Susan and Elizabeth have been humbled daily by the generosity of community support they continue to receive in the form of groceries, financial help, dog walks, check ins, laundry, prepared meals, errands and more. Susan requires full-time care so Elizabeth has not been able to work since late November.
The support net is being cast farther through this GoFundMe platform. Those who have voiced desire to support, somehow, someway, from both near and afar can have an avenue to do so. Contributions (public or anonymous) to this fund will help with living expenses as well as current and future medical bills. It is possible Susan may need a paid sitter for part of the day when Elizabeth returns to work.
Susan and Elizabeth’s community of love and support is broad. Their gratitude is fierce for every aided task, phone call, penny, and contribution towards bringing a complete peace symbol to their (our) lives once again.
