On March 31, 2018, Susan and I were talking on the phone early in the morning. Laughing and carrying on like sisters do, Susan asked me if I was home yet? I said no, almost, and she said someone is in the driveway. Suddenly I heard her scream and scream again. I called her name twice and no answer. Panic set in and I dialed 911. I was about 5 minutes from my house where Susan and my 2 children were. I had no idea that I would come home that morning to my youngest daughter outside looking for help and my oldest daughter helping Susan who was lying on my kitchen floor with a gun shot wound to the neck. The amazing woman that she is, was calm and collected. She directed my kids to help her and they did a fantastic job in calling 911. Susan's husband shot his way through my deadbolt and then doorknob and then proceeded to shoot her. As she fell to the ground, he then walked into my living room, ending his own life leaving two children to see. Paramedics arrived at the scene and Susan was flown to Shock Trauma at UMMC. I stood in my driveway that morning trying to figure out how someone could do this. Then I thought about the conversation Susan and I had the night before about how in life, you are supposed to be happy and then my phone rang. It was Susan! She gave me instructions on how to proceed for her welfare. I stood there in disbelief over a 30 second conversation because of the courage and determination I was witnessing from Susan. She's always making sure the rest of us are okay. She was then put on a respirator and could no longer speak to us. She of course found a way to communicate and as we all know, the Bosslady, never skips a beat. She has since gone through rigorous therapies and relearning how to use her arms. Susan now has a spinal cord injury due to the bullet hitting 5 of her vertabrae. She has a long road of recovery ahead of her but I know that Susan's will to live a great life will supercede the challenges she faces. She is now in Rehabilitation and right on target. We expect her to be home at the end of June. We are asking anyone willing to help donate today for the items and expenses she will incur on this journey. My sister has always been a tenacious and driven woman but to see her in her darkest hour full of grace and strength is something I will never forget. Please consider donating to Susan so this transition is somewhat easier on her. She will need a handicap ramp to her home and a walk in shower contructed, amongst other things. Evil walked in my door that morning but let's not let it win. Help me lessen the burden for my sister, she's a mother, a co-worker, a best friend, and truly an amazingly strong person. Thank you for your time and consideration.
