Susannah's Access Van

Donation protected
Susannah is a bright, happy, 11 year old girl who lives with her parents and teenage siblings on a small farm in Mid North South Australia. As her parents, we are organising this fundraiser with the help of a friend who suggested community fundraising to assist in getting us a new van that better suits Susannah's needs, and will handle the country roads and long distances much better. We have been recommended a Hyundai iMax with rear access for the wheelchair and a swing out back seat for Susannah on longer trips.

Susannah was born with Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus and Cerebellar Hypoplasia and has had multiple surgeries on her brain and spine since birth.

Susannah is unable to walk and so she uses a wheelchair for mobility. She is dependent on others for all activities of daily living, including feeding, continence, bathing and dressing.

Susannah also has cortical visual impairment and difficulties communicating at times.

Susannah attends the local area school and enjoys horse riding through Riding for the Disabled. She loves going to church and Sunday School with her family and playing games!

The family live out of town, so require a Wheelchair accessible vehicle to take Susannah to the school bus, Riding for the Disabled (an hour away) and regular appointments in Adelaide (3 hours away).

Susannah was provided with a Wheelchair Accessible Van by Variety, the Children’s Charity five years ago. The van is now 18 years old and has almost 200,000km on it. It is showing a lot of wear and tear and needs to be upgraded.

Susannah’s mother works part time and her father is self-employed.
Susannah's parents provide all of Susannah's care at home.

The costs of a vehicle and personal travel cannot be claimed through NDIS, so these expenses come out of Susannah's parents' pocket.

Susannah’s parents applied to Variety for a grant to assist them to purchase a new van, however, Variety are not accepting applications for the next couple of years because there are numerous other children waiting for funding too.

Susannah’s parents simply cannot afford a new van in which to take Susannah to school, church, Riding for the Disabled and her medical and therapy appointments in Adelaide.

They are seeking community financial support to fund the cost of a new van for Susannah. Susannah's parents have been advised that NDIS will fund the cost of the modifications to the new vehicle.

Please consider helping Susannah obtain her new 'wheels' - even the smallest donation will help.
