Urgent home repair assistance for Susannah & Harun

Dear Crestone community and other friends…

We regret the necessity of asking for help while we’re all in the midst of a pandemic and our country is facing a general election crisis. However, our situation doesn’t have a sense of timing; we have a pressing need and have reached a point where we feel we can no longer hesitate to request the support of our friends and community.

Sadly, we have to leave

As many of you may already know, Harun’s muscle/nerve degeneration from post-polio syndrome has made it increasingly difficult for him to maintain our home, and my degenerative emphysema has brought about a clear need for us to move to a lower altitude. In order to do this, we must sell our much-loved, owner-built house in this extraordinary community, where Harun in his capacity as the POA EAOC administrator in the early 2000s gained the respect and trust of a host of owner/builders and Susannah organized the All for Love tsunami benefit, co-produced the Crestone Community Cookbook which continues to support Neighbors Helping Neighbors, and co-founded the Crestone/Baca Indivisible group, which continues to advocate for political fairness, justice and honorable candidates.

Having invested so much effort and energy into our home and community for more than 22 years, we’ve resisted the notion of leaving Crestone for many months. However, recent events have forced us to accept that we must expedite our search for a home at a lower altitude and for an accommodation that requires no physical maintenance on our part.

Our situation is this:

Having made the difficult decision to put our house on the market and initiated the necessary steps to ready it for presentation, we discovered a structural problem on our southern wall that we absolutely must fix – for our own comfort and safety as long as we must still live here, and certainly before we can even think about offering our house for sale. However, we simply do not have the means to pay for the necessary repairs and related expenses, which will amount to approximately $4,000.

Repairs must be started and completed before freezes set in

Having exhausted our savings, with credit card debt and relying on a limited fixed income, we just learned that we are no longer qualified to obtain an unsecured loan, and without that we don’t have the ability to pay for the necessary repairs, which must be started and completed before winter sets in. While we will now seek to refinance our mortgage, that will require us to find an additional $1,000 to pay out-of-pocket costs for a new appraisal. In any case, timing has become a major problem as pursuing the refinancing will be a six-week-long process, and approval of our application is not guaranteed.

For these reasons, we will feel honored and deeply grateful for any donations you can make towards helping us reach our $5,000 goal and also would appreciate any loving moral support you can offer us at this time in lieu of material assistance. We also truly welcome this opportunity to finally let those of you who’ve been wondering what’s been happening with us know how things truly are, and are thankful for being granted sufficient grace and the necessary humility with which to do so.
