Tanzania Clean Water Project

Update December 2015: I went on this trip, and experienced the incredible impact first-hand.   It was more amazing, impactful, and inspiring than I had even anticipated.  Your donations, in any amount, mean the world to them...and change their world & future for the better.  They are immensely grateful.  In their communication of gratitude to us as individuals, we explained to them that we are merely representatives of MANY many people around the world who care about them, and have donated to help. They are our sisters and brothers...and it's up to us to look out for each other, as we would want someone to do for us.  I plan to return next year, fall 2016.  Any funds donated here between now and when I set up next year's campaign will be combined.  To see pictures and read about the incredible people & experiences, please see my public posts on Facebook from September.  I hope these loving people, so rich & generous in sincerity, authenticity, and acceptance, touch you as they did me.  Blessings!  -Susan

Hello friends!

Thank you for visiting this page!  This September I will be traveling to Tanzania to volunteer as part of E.P.I.C's Fellowship Program.

E.P.I.C. (Everyday People Initiating Change) is a non-profit 501c3 organization that brings safe, clean drinking water to the developing world, while supporting other aspects of community growth. It is also a movement to encourage other Everyday People to Initiate positive Change in the worlds around them.

As some of you might know, water is a very scarce resource in parts of Tanzania. The women that fetch the water typically have to travel great distances multiple times a day to fetch water from either a natural spring filled with bacteria, mosquitoes and dirt, or from a well that is in great need of repair.

Quick fact:  More than 2.2 million people die each year from water related diseases.1.8 million children die every year as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation. This amounts to around 5000 deaths a day.

How did E.P.I.C start?

It started 10 years ago when a couple of young girlfriends from LA and NYC,  Alexi Panos and Tennille Amor, had strong desire to do something positive in the world, although neither of them felt capable without having enough money, success, or power to make a real difference. After seeing a news report about one ordinary woman's work to raise a huge amount of money for a country in the developing world, the girls felt inspired and motivated enough to start making a difference right away, even if they had to start out small. They realized that every individual has an extremely important role to play in the world, and although there is so much to be done, it is all possible if we come together to make the change, one step at a time.

E.P.I.C now:

E.P.I.C. was formed to show people of every age, race, creed or social status that we have the ability to change the world for the better every day in whatever ways we choose. Every year, E.P.I.C. takes on new projects (such as providing clean water to the developing world by drilling clean water wells, helping with community development, and improving on health and hygiene in developing villages). These projects are intended to encourage other everyday people to initiate positive change in whatever ways they feel called to pursue.

E.P.I.C. is a grassroots organization, meaning that everything is run by a very small team of people. Each of the villages that are homes to E.P.I.C. projects are visited frequently to ensure the sustainability of the projects, while supporting further growth.

Where does the donation money go?

Before traveling to Africa, each volunteer is responsible for raising the $2,950 which goes directly to the cost of the program.  Over a third of this goes towards whatever project is being worked on while there (example, drilling, maintenance, building costs, teaching supplies).  Another portion of the fee covers on the ground expenses while in Tanzania. The remainder of the fee goes to the administrative costs of running the program, and the two team leaders.  Anything extra goes directly to individual children in need. This is a tax-deductible contribution!
