Several neighbors in our McLean, Virginia neighborhood experienced severe water damage during the storm on the morning of July 8, 2019, including flooding and sewer/infrastructure damage. The most significant impact was to the home of that our dear neighbor, Susan Rude.
Susan is a retired civil servant who lost her husband approximately 12 years ago. She served over 40 years within the Secret Service and just retired in the fall. She is a beloved neighbor, dog-lover, and all-around wonderful woman. While most of her possessions were lost in the storm, we were able to help her salvage a few of her dearest memories, including the flag she received at her husband's military burial.
The damages to her home are extensive and overwhelming. The cost of mitigation and repairs are well over $100,000 which will not be covered by her insurance. Her insurance company denied coverage because she doesn’t have Flood Insurance; her home is not in a FEMA Flood Zone, so Flood Insurance was not recommended to her when she had asked the insurance broker years ago if she needed any additional insurance.
On July 8, as Little Pimmit Run rose higher and higher with the heavy rains, so did the creek that Fairfax County buried underground behind Susan's house several years ago. The underground infrastructure could not handle the enormous volume of water which came above ground with such force that manhole covers popped off.
The result was a tsunami that flowed into several homes, impacting Susan Rude's home most significantly. It ripped apart fencing, moved a hot tub, broke an exterior storm door inwards, and flooded her entire basement along with 3-4 feet of her main level with sewage, mud and rain water.
The failure of the stormwater infrastructure also resulted in the water bending her garage door on the front of the house outwards and the weight of the mud caused her basement ceiling to collapse. Several pictures are attached to capture some of the massive damage.
We set up this Go Fund Me Page for anyone who wants to support her during this difficult time, as the unexpected financial burden to rebuild is quite significant.
Thank you so much for supporting Susan in rebuilding her home...and life.
