My name is Stephen, and for as long as I can remember, life has been a series of losses, survival, and searching for a place where I could finally feel safe.
When I was 10 years old, my parents divorced, and the foundation of my childhood disappeared overnight. I stayed with my father, a man who struggled with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression. I loved him, but mental illness often stole the father I needed. As a child, I learned to live in constant uncertainty, never knowing what each day would bring. Fear, loneliness, and confusion became emotions I carried so often that they began to feel normal.
At 13, my mother regained custody of me. I hoped life would finally get better, but instead I entered another painful chapter. She was married to an abusive alcoholic who treated me more like free labor than a child. Instead of feeling protected, I felt invisible. I spent years believing my worth was measured only by how much I could endure. Childhood slowly slipped away, replaced by responsibilities, fear, and emotional scars that followed me into adulthood.
When I was 16, my mother found the strength to leave him. Soon after, she met a man whose kindness changed my life forever. For the first time, someone showed me what unconditional love, patience, and guidance looked like. He became the father I had spent my entire life searching for. He taught me that I mattered, that I had value, and that my past did not have to define my future. He helped heal wounds I had hidden so deeply that I didn't even know they existed.
Just when I began to believe life was finally turning around, it all came crashing down again.
In 2017, I lost my mother to cancer. Two years later, in 2019, cancer took away the man I proudly called Dad. Losing them felt like losing the only solid ground I had ever known. Before I could truly recover, my best friend died by suicide. That loss left questions that will never have answers and a silence that words can never fully describe.
Grief has a way of changing a person. It doesn't just break your heart—it changes the way you see yourself and the world around you. There were days when getting out of bed felt impossible, nights when the memories were louder than the silence, and moments when I wondered if life would ever feel hopeful again. Trauma teaches you to expect loss, to build walls around your heart, and to question whether happiness can ever last. But despite everything, I am still here.My faith in Jesus Christ has been the light that refused to go out in the darkest moments of my life. When I had every reason to give up, God gave me the strength to take one more step. I don't believe my story ends with pain. I believe it ends with purpose. Every hardship has strengthened my compassion, my perseverance, and my desire to build a better future.Right now, that perseverance is being tested in a very immediate, practical way. Following a recent layoff from my job, I find myself completely alone without a network or family to lean on, facing an urgent financial crisis. My bills are due in just three days, and I am down to my last $7.To prevent eviction, keep my utility services active, and ensure I do not lose the transportation I need to secure my next job, I am asking for help to cover these specific, immediate necessities:Past-Due Rent: $650Truck Payment: $350Electric Bill: $280Water Bill: $65Total Emergency Need: $1,345Every dollar donated goes directly toward these bills to keep a roof over my head and the lights on while I aggressively apply for work and interview to get back on my feet. Sharing this exact breakdown is important to me so that you know exactly how your generosity is protecting my living situation and serving as a bridge toward my self-sufficiency. If my story has touched your heart and you feel led to help me cross this bridge, I would be forever grateful. Every prayer, every kind word, and every act of generosity reminds me that even after unimaginable loss, hope can still be found. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. From the bottom of my heart, may God richly bless you and your family.
