Survive and start again

Hello everyone again, as you know, the situation in Gaza has continued to worsen. Here's an update from our friend Ashraf on his story and that of his family.

"Dear friends who have supported us over the past months,

We hope this message reaches you in good health. We are writing to you under extremely difficult circumstances.

We are still alive. That is the best—and unfortunately the only—good news we can share with you right now.

As you know, the situation in Gaza has drastically worsened since May. We are constantly being forced to move from one so-called “safe place” to another. We are being starved slowly, fighting for every bag of flour and every tomato.

Over the past months, your financial support has allowed us to care for our family. We used your donations to buy food, medicine, and basic necessities. But with the extremely high costs of getting money into Gaza and the soaring prices of food, our resources are nearly depleted.

Every day, we see increasing international pressure on the Netanyahu government to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. Until that happens, we have no choice but to rely on your generosity to keep our families alive.

It breaks my heart to write this. It is painful to be so dependent on others. But hunger has silenced my pride.

Please keep us in your thoughts. Your support truly makes the difference between life and death for us.

We hope to meet you one day and thank you in person for all that you have done—on a quiet day, in peace.

Hola a todos de nuevo. Como saben, la situación en Gaza sigue empeorando. Aquí tienen una actualización de nuestro amigo Ashraf sobre su historia y la de su familia.

Seguimos vivos. Esta es la mejor —y desafortunadamente, la única— buena noticia que podemos compartir con ustedes en este momento.

Como saben, la situación en Gaza ha empeorado drásticamente desde mayo. Nos vemos obligados constantemente a desplazarnos de un supuesto "lugar seguro" a otro. Nos estamos muriendo de hambre lentamente, luchando por cada bolsa de harina y cada tomate.

Durante los últimos meses, su apoyo financiero nos ha permitido cuidar de nuestra familia. Usamos sus donaciones para comprar alimentos, medicamentos y artículos de primera necesidad. Pero con los altísimos costos de ingresar dinero a Gaza y el alza de los precios de los alimentos, nuestros recursos están casi agotados.

Cada día, vemos cómo aumenta la presión internacional sobre el gobierno de Netanyahu para que permita la entrada de ayuda humanitaria a Gaza. Hasta que eso suceda, no tenemos más opción que depender de su generosidad para mantener a nuestras familias con vida.

Me rompe el corazón escribir esto. Es doloroso. Depender tanto de los demás. Pero el hambre ha silenciado mi orgullo.

Hi, I am Esther Alcántara from Spain, and this fundraiser is for a family I had the opportunity to meet in 2022 in Gaza, when i was there asa cooperator. They ara Ashraf, Noor, Salma, Adam and Sally. After a year of suffering the threat of daily death, they have decided to try to leave Gaza and start over. We have been connected since we met and it seems to me very hard and unfair what they are having to endure, imminent danger of death, hunger, disease, lack of medicines, stress, terror, insomnia and in short more than undignified living conditions. I am helplessly accompanying you in this year-long nightmare and given that circumstances do not seem to be improving, I would like to help you to be able to leave Gaza so that you can survive, recover and recover your lives. That is why we started this campaign to try to get the money so that the Gaza 5 can leave in the first place, and after transiting in Egypt, they can settle in another country and get their lives back. Here is his story written by themselves:

"Help Ashraf and His Family Rebuild Their Lives Hello, A year ago, if someone asked me about my dream, I would have looked up with a smile and imagined beautiful things—big ambitions, plans, and hopes. But today, my dream is much simpler: I just want my life back. My name is Ashraf, and I used to be a theater artist working with youth and children in Gaza. My goal was to give them joy, hope, and a brighter future. My family—my wife, our three children, and I—lived together in a small but happy home. But everything changed on October 7th, when we were forced to leave our home in northern Gaza. We left with only one plan: to stay alive. We made two rules for survival: Stay together, no matter what. Avoid danger, as much as we could. We had to give up everything—our home, our belongings, and even the basic comforts of life. No more warm meals, hot showers, or even the chance to live with dignity. Over time, things got worse. We had no access to proper hygiene, food, or medical care. We moved eight times, setting up makeshift tents, searching for water, and hoping to survive another day. We’ve lost everything—our savings, our house, our car, and sadly, many friends. This isn’t the first conflict we’ve endured, and we’ve always been prepared. We had an emergency plan, a bag packed with essentials, and a plan for our children. But this time, even the best preparations weren’t enough. There’s no home to return to, no car, no road back. Even the dream of returning to our old life feels impossible now. So, what is our dream today? Simply, it’s to start over. We have survived for 12 long months—months filled with uncertainty, danger, and hardship. Now, we need your help to start fresh, outside of Gaza. Your support will help us cover the high costs of leaving Gaza when the opportunity arises. From there, we can begin again. Our children—Adam, Salma, and Sally—will return to school. My wife, Noor, will begin setting up our new home, and I will return to the stage to share stories of resilience and hope. War can take away everything beautiful in life... but only if we let it. Please help us rebuild our lives. Every contribution brings us closer to a new beginning."

Hola, soy Esther Alcántara de España y esta recaudación es para una familia a la que tuve oportunidad de conocer en 2022 en Gaza, cuando estuve allí como cooperante. Ellos son Ashraf, Noor, Salma, Adam y Sally. Tras un año sufriendo la amenaza de la muerte diaria han decidido tratar de salir de Gaza y empezar de nuevo. Hemos estado conectados desde que nos conocimos y me parece muy duro e injusto lo que están teniendo que soportar, peligro de muerte inminente, hambre, enfermedad, falta de medicinas, estrés, terror, insomnio y en resumen condiciones de vida mas que indignas. Les acompaño con impotencia en esta pesadilla que ya dura un año y dado a que las circunstancias no parecen ir a mejor, me gustaría ayudarles a poder salir de Gaza y que puedan sobrevivir, reponerse y recuperar sus vidas. Es por esto que iniciamos esta campaña para tratar de conseguir el dinero para que salgan los 5 de Gaza en primer lugar, y después de hacer tránsito en Egipto, puedan instalarse en otro país y recuperar sus vidas. Aquí les dejo su historia escrita por ellos mismos:

"Hace un año, si alguien me hubiera preguntado sobre mi sueño, habría levantado la vista con una sonrisa y me habría imaginado cosas hermosas: grandes ambiciones, planes y esperanzas. Pero hoy, mi sueño es mucho más simple: solo quiero recuperar mi vida. Mi nombre es Ashraf y solía ser un artista de teatro que trabajaba con jóvenes y niños en Gaza. Mi objetivo era darles alegría, esperanza y un futuro mejor. Mi familia, mi esposa, nuestros tres hijos y yo, vivíamos juntos en un hogar pequeño pero feliz. Pero todo cambió el 7 de octubre, cuando nos vimos obligados a abandonar nuestro hogar en el norte de Gaza. Nos fuimos con un solo plan: seguir con vida. Establecimos dos reglas para sobrevivir: permanecer juntos, pase lo que pase. Evitar el peligro, en la medida de lo posible. Tuvimos que renunciar a todo: nuestro hogar, nuestras pertenencias e incluso las comodidades básicas de la vida. Se acabaron las comidas calientes, las duchas calientes o incluso la oportunidad de vivir con dignidad. Con el tiempo, las cosas empeoraron. No teníamos acceso a una higiene, alimentos o atención médica adecuados. Nos mudamos ocho veces, montando tiendas de campaña improvisadas, buscando agua y esperando sobrevivir un día más. Lo hemos perdido todo: nuestros ahorros, nuestra casa, nuestro coche y, lamentablemente, a muchos amigos.

Este no es el primer conflicto que hemos soportado, y siempre hemos estado preparados. Teníamos un plan de emergencia, una bolsa llena de artículos esenciales y un plan para nuestros hijos. Pero esta vez, incluso los mejores preparativos no fueron suficientes. No hay casa a la que regresar, ni coche, ni carretera de regreso. Incluso el sueño de volver a nuestra antigua vida parece imposible ahora. Entonces, ¿cuál es nuestro sueño hoy? Simplemente, es empezar de nuevo. Hemos sobrevivido durante 12 largos meses, meses llenos de incertidumbre, peligro y dificultades. Ahora, necesitamos su ayuda para empezar de nuevo, fuera de Gaza. Su apoyo nos ayudará a cubrir los altos costos de salir de Gaza cuando surja la oportunidad. A partir de ahí, podemos empezar de nuevo. Nuestros hijos, Adam, Salma y Sally, regresarán a la escuela.
