Help us out of Homelessness after major losses
Hi, my name is Jerry Shafton, and I am currently homeless after facing some really tough challenges. I’ve lost my home, my car, and my health is continuing to decline due to cancer. I am living in a weekly motel due to a generous gift from dear friends. Without this gift, I literally would be sleeping on the streets. I have been fighting for disability benefits for the last four years, which has led to these hardships.
I have been separated from my emotional support dog named Ecurb because of my uncertain living situation. He is my rock through everything and thankfully, he’s been living with a friend this whole time. Life has knocked me down repeatedly, but I have always found a way to push through. Right now, however, I need help.
HOW I GOT HERE:
I have been battling a fatal cancer called Multiple Myeloma for over four years, going in and out of remission. Additionally, I have endured two major spine fusion surgeries—cervical and thoracic—which have left me unable to work. My vision is deteriorating and due to cancer treatment side-effects I am in need of extensive dental work.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) originally determined that I am disabled and actually did pay me one month of benefits. After a review, they canceled my claim because I missed work credits for March 2020. They said in addition to being disabled, I needed to have five consecutive months of work credits. During this time I was in the hospital undergoing a bone marrow transplant to kick my cancer into remission. That's what resulted in loosing those credits.
Unfortunately, my lawyer could not help plead my case, so I chose Citizens Disability Advocacy Group to appeal my claim. Until my appeal is approved I am continuing to work dilegently with Citizens Disability, daily and weekly, so they stay focused on a favorable outcome for me.
I’m now asking for your support. I never thought I would need to ask for help again, but I’ve run out of options. Every donation, no matter how small will help me care for Ecurb, cover our basic needs, and hold on until my disability is approved again.
I am forever grateful if you have helped me in the past. If you can't donate, sharing my story helps just as much.
Thank you for taking the time to read my GoFundMe and for any kindness you can offer. If you cannot help, I completely understand.
