Survival for Black Queer Doula

I’m 24, black, queer, and non-binary. For a while I was in an abusive family environment that led me to leaving my undergrad degree and enter a cycle of poverty. I was being financially abused to prevent me from leaving. Against all odds, and a few lucky chain of events I am now living on my own. However, after living here for 14 months now I can tell you that it’s not adequate housing. On top of that, the entity that owns my apartment building is distant and non-caring. A slumlord. Most weeks they don’t come during their schedule office hours to unlock laundry facilities for us. It’s hard to have a clean environment with rodent infestations in the building (I’ve done my best to keep it out of my apartment). Recently a leak developed in my bathroom from the apartment above. I let my leasing office know, and still no one’s been by to even look at it.

As my life develops in 2020, it’s been hard to find adequate employment. I need accommodations that most jobs aren’t willing to allow in our capitalist society. With my stimulus money, I took a leap & investment in myself by enrolling in and completing a doula certification course with Sumi’s Touch. I’m excited and motivated to start my own free-lance doula consulting services to the Black and LGBTQ communities. However, I need help getting there. Here’s where my ask comes in.

My goal is to quit my lease as soon as I can raise funds to pay my October (yes, October) and November rent. I also will start to look for adequate housing to move into ideally by December. I’d like to establish my business and purchase everything I need to start services and create sustainable income and work for myself. I’d like to start offering birth support services to my community centering Black and LGBTQ families.

I’m asking for your help to help others.

Thank you for reading.
