Suri the Shire

Donation protected
Hi all, my name is Natasha. My family and I welcomed our 1st foal on 6/24/23! This has been a much anticipated baby from our beautiful mare Freya and sire Tango. Tragically at just 30 hours old, baby Suri had her leg shattered by mama in an attempt to protect her. Upon receiving this devastating news, we were faced with 2 options. Emergency surgery to save her leg or euthanasia. After a very tearful conversation, my husband and I decided her life was worth fighting for and to give our sweet Suri a fighting chance to walk again. The vets is very cautiously optimistic about her making a full recovery with surgery. She has been taken to the University of Wisconsin Madison’s Veterinary College for emergency surgery on 6/26/23. The cost of surgery and a 2 week stay at the UW is $12,000 or more if they encounter any complications. We are asking for any donations you can spare to help us get our girl up on 4 legs again. Suri’s life means so much to us that we are willing to do all we can. But we definitely need your help & appreciate any and all contributions to her care. If you are unable to donate, please share her story & send up a pray for her. She will have a long road to recovery, but she is worth it Sincerely, The Flaws Family ***UPDATE*** Suri made it out of surgery after 4.5 hours. Doctor said she was very happy with how the surgery went as far as putting everything back together with the pins and plates. However upon waking, she spiked a dangerously high fever and they are now combating that. Plan is to tube her and get fluids on her as she has not nursed on mom in a long while & also get meds onboard to bring down fever. She said our girl is not out of the woods yet but the surgery was the biggest hurdle so she’s happy she’s on the other side of that. So please continue to send her good vibes and prayers! Thank you so much to those people rooting for Baby Suri

***UPDATE***
6/28/23
Tonight I got to actually lay my hands, head, face, lips and heart all over my girl Suri! I haven’t been able to physically be with her since the day after she was born & this humans heart was so ready to smoother her with love Suri has been making slow but steady strides in the right direction so the doctor said we could finally go visit. It’s all I could think about today. Today they have completely taken her off seizure meds & oxygen, and the mild sedation meds and fluids will be discontinued tomorrow if she can have another successful night. She has started to get up on her own with her cast on her leg and just today has started being able to walk and bare weight in her new leg unassisted and without being deliriou.. This is HUGE. She is still unable to lay back down to sternal position so she needs help with that yet which still requires around the clock monitoring so she doesn’t re-injury that ever so fragile leg. All in all the doctors update today was the best one we have received. She said she is complete shocked at the turn around this little lady has made in less that 24 hours, given the very poor state she was in only a day or so ago. Because of the state she was in for a few days, she was unable to nurse from mama Freya successfully causing a huge lag in their bond. Unfortunately, Freya has become anxious and, for lack of a better word, uninterested in mothering Suri. The doctors felt it was best for her to be weaned off mom fully & be hand reared. As a result, Freya was picked up and taken home this afternoon. While this isn’t ideal, it’s the best for both mom/ baby and the safely of all involved. I wholeheartedly believe that because of all of you praying, sending positivity into the universe and rooting for her, Suri has felt the love & has kept fighting to stay here with us There is no amount of words I can write to express our sincerest gratitude. You all have truly blown me away with your kindness & generosity. From family & friends to complete strangers. The love and support we have felt is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for everything. I will forever be grateful & humbled Here is a photo dump of Suri from today and all the progress she has made. Please keep sharing, donating & sending her prayers. This journy is far from over and it will still be a couple week before she gets to come back home
