Scrub Caps for Nurses on 5 South (Covid Unit )

I’m a labor/delivery nurse at UVA. This week I was redeployed to 5 South, one of the COVID-19 units, to play a small role for this amazing floor.
In addition to being a harrowing experience for the nurses in this unit, I noticed how cumbersome it was for the staff to safely/efficiently remove their PPE without getting hair caught on contaminated goggles/glasses/gowns/respirators, etc. Yet despite taking every conceivable precaution, it was often just inevitable.

Standard PPE for COVID-19 patients at UVA does not require staff to wear scrub caps, but UVA certainly permits employees to wear caps if they so choose. Hence, caps are not provided to the Covid -19 unit (although required PPE seemed well stocked and available ❤️). Meanwhile on MY unit, the majority of staff DO wear caps- although finding a reusable cap is not an easy task. Fortunately a fellow Labor/delivery nurse, Karlie, has been hand making caps for our unit!

While on the Covid-19 unit, I was sporting my adorable cap (brand named “Flipped”) made by Karlie. The nurses on the Covid unit loved it and asked me about purchasing their own caps, particularly ones from Karlie/Flipped.

I fell in love with the staff of 5 south (COVID-19), tirelessly fighting the battle like so many others, with big hearts and great attitudes. It just didn’t feel right that they should purchase their own caps to feel a bit tidier and safer.

I would like to supply them with beautiful, handmade caps by my fellow nurse/coworker, Karlie. The rough cost of one handmade cap is $20-25 a piece. If you feel so led, please donate and help me say “thank you” to these amazing people!
