Hi, Friends. As some of our close friends and family know, my mom has suffered from chronic pain and other symptoms since 2013. Between then and now she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Even after being diagnosed and living with her day- to- day pain, she managed to take care of her kids, and stay as positive as a mama of 6 with RA could. She is definitely our hero. FINALLY, in April 2019, my mom sat down with her pain management doctor and told him something was very wrong. She was in immense pain. My Mom broke down crying begging for help to know what was wrong with her because doctor after doctor told her it was nothing or it was just from “growing old.” However, by the grace of God, he listened to her and ordered a cervical MRI. Mya was finally diagnosed with Acquired Chiari Malformation. (https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Disorders/All-Disorders/Chiari-Malformation-Information-Page#disorders-r1 )July 31, 2019 my beautiful mama is going to have brain surgery. The surgery will stop process from destroying anymore of her nerves. The surgery to be performed is called Posterior Fossa Decompression. Essentially, the surgeon(s) will remove part of her skull and then will remove some upper cervical vertebrae, then open the sack that surrounds her brain (Dura) so they can add a patch it to make it bigger. The cerebellum tonsils have descended down into her Spinal column pressing against her spinal cord. All of this will be done to alleviate cramping of her brain into her spinal column. This surgery is one of the most painful surgeries one can have. And although the pain will be immense, the need for medical supplies, support, and daycare will be the hardest part.
My mom (Mya Moore-Harper) is an amazing mother of 6 beautiful kids. The youngest is 2 year old Beaux. While she heals, she will be unable to pick him up or care for him the way that a two year old needs, so this money will help with the expense of daycare for the next year, food, and her medical supplies (shower chair, walker, etc.) that insurance won’t cover. Also, due to continuous and expensive doctor appointments my mom and step father have fallen behind on the Mortgage. A struggle for money within a household of so many kids already exists, so to add the cost of medical supplies, recovery time (no work) food, etc. can be and will be difficult. The funds raised will be used to help prevent foreclosure of the Mortgage ($10,000), lost wages during recovery ($6,000), my step father missing work with not enough Paid Time Off to assist with recovery, ($5,000), child care for Baby Beaux ($2,000) and all medical expenses to come (unknown amount).
Recovery from just the surgery alone is about 6 weeks. In addition to that, regaining complete mobility and getting back to her normal, independent day-to-day life can take up to six months if everything goes very well! If you know my mama she is definitely a fighter and she is very independent. Relying on others and asking for this kind of help is extremely hard. But she knows now that without support (financially, physically and otherwise) she simply cannot have the needed recovery time to be the best mom she can be and make a full and healthy recovery. Due to the fact that there is no cure for Chiari Malformation, there is a potential for more procedures in the future. All of this being said, your prayers are very welcomed and any support that one can give is welcome. Thank you!
