Surgery for Baby Julian

Julian Bruce Goldie

One month before celebrating his first birthday, little Julian Goldie will have to undergo a serious heart operation at Stanford Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto, California.  This initial year of life has been a tough one for him as he’s already endured an operation to repair a hernia and then another surgery to address a dislocated hip, which was followed by having to wear a body cast for over three months (and he’s still in a brace).  Incredibly, Julian has persevered through these tribulations with constant smiles and laughter, and an uplifting spirit that inspires and brings joy to all who know him.

Mysteriously, though, each of these procedures were followed by worrisome breathing complications, one resulting in a two week hospital stay (most of that time in the ICU).  After a few tests his doctors ultimately discovered that he has an uncommon and dangerous condition known as a pulmonary artery sling.  Basically, it’s a birth defect where the pulmonary artery (connecting the heart to the lungs) has grown around the trachea instead of alongside it, and is choking him.  This will require open heart surgery to repair, and as you can imagine it will be quite an emotional and physical undertaking for Julian and his family.  And of course it will be incredibly expensive.

Fortunately, Julian is insured and a good portion of the hospital costs will be covered; however, there will be thousands of dollars in deductibles, uncovered procedures, necessary nanny care, etc. that the family is already struggling with from the previous events and this ordeal has only just begun.  Our only concern is for Julian’s procedure to be successful and safe, and that he recovers quickly.  But the bills are piling up as well, and though his parents feel a bit uneasy asking for donations, every little bit that helps offset the costs will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much, and please keep Julian in your thoughts and prayers.  His surgery is scheduled for the morning of June 27th, and will likely be in the hospital for some two weeks afterwards.  We will post updates.  His first birthday, July 22nd, is going to be a special one.  Thanks again!

Thank you from Julian and our entire family for your contribution!
