If 2020 has taught us anything, it was how life can change at a moment’s notice. My cousin Mary and her husband Miguel have tried to be parents for more than 7 years. On October 13th, 2020 they were finally blessed with two beautiful babies, "Emilio and Ary". Both babies were born premature but Ary was born with more health problems. Before she was born, doctors confirmed that Ary would be born with a bilateral cleft lip and cleft palate. Of the various degrees of severity with cleft lip and cleft palate, Ary was born with the most severe type. Her condition needs constant monitoring to prevent asphyxiation.
My beautiful niece necessitates the use of a plaque that does the work of the palate so that she can be fed without choking. Her condition requires several surgeries at different points of her life: the first at 6 months to be able to join the bones of the palate as much as possible, the second surgery at 18 months to check the lips and internal muscles and her primary teeth, the third surgery at 6 or 7 years old when the permanent teeth begin to come out and require adjusting, and finally at the age of 18 when she stops growing and her wisdom teeth grow in to repair the aesthetic part of the molars and lip. In addition to these surgeries, Ary was also born with an inguinal hernia where part of her intestine and ovary are compromised. The hernia repair is required as soon as possible so that it does not run the risk of becoming encapsulated as it may be fatal.
Mary and Miguel are the most loving people and have never hesitated to help their family or their community in Mexico City. Today, they find themselves buried in expensive hospital bills and caring for their newborns’ complex needs. Your generosity would help this beautiful baby pay for expensive surgeries at a private hospital whose costs aren’t covered completely by her mom’s insurance, in home nursing staff to help 2 working parents and additional therapies to improve Ary’s quality of life. Mi hermosa sobrina necesita el uso de una placa que hace el trabajo del paladar para que pueda alimentarse sin atragantarse. Su condición requiere varias cirugías en diferentes momentos de su vida: la primera a los 6 meses para poder unir los huesos del paladar tanto como sea posible, la segunda cirugía a los 18 meses para revisar los labios y los músculos internos y sus dientes primarios, la tercera cirugía a los 6 o 7 años cuando los dientes permanentes comienzan a salir y requieren ajuste, y finalmente a los 18 años cuando deja de crecer y le crecen las muelas del juicio para reparar la parte estética de los molares y labio. Además de estas cirugías, Ary también nació con una hernia inguinal donde parte de su intestino y ovario están comprometidos. La reparación de la hernia se requiere lo antes posible para que no corra el riesgo de encapsularse, ya que puede ser fatal.
