Surgery for our Momo

Momo's Story

Something inhumane has happened recently to our family involving our cat Momo. You may have seen him a few times before on our families separate social medias. He’s currently undergoing surgery because of recent events.

We shall explain

Our little guy went missing a few days ago on Saturday 3rd April. He likes to go out a lot but usually comes back every few hours and back home in the evenings. By 9 we were a little worried as we haven’t seen him since morning so we started calling for him in the house just in case he was hiding, and then started searching outside. Still no sign of Momo. We assumed he just went on a little adventure and would come back later. The next morning there was still no sign of him, so we continued the search for him.

Later that Sunday evening we received a call from an elderly neighbour opposite our garden side thinking they saw a cat of our description (we had given out flyers already at this point) and was limping past the front of her house. We quickly rushed over to search but couldn’t find anything. One of us continued searching for a little longer hoping for a sign of him and then decided to sleep downstairs on the sofa fairly close to the cat flap.

The next morning we found him asleep by the sofa on the floor. From initial observation we could tell he was exhausted and filthy and then slowly realised he wasn't able to move his back legs at all. We quickly took him to the vet to get him checked properly. After waiting for a bit they said that there was a chance that his back legs were paralysed. They advised us to get him a proper scan and potentially surgery if necessary. So we made an agreement as a family with costs and took him to the nearest animal hospital. Once we got there and they started to have a look at him they told us he was starting to get some feelings back in his legs. We were then told we had to leave him there for a a fair few days and that they would call in the morning for an update so we all waited anxiously.

They called the next morning to explain his situation. Apparently after doing some scans on him they found a metal pellet lodged in his back that had hit his spine. They said that the pellet was from some kind of firing device meaning an air rifle or pistol. after hearing that my family was extremely upset and as well as infuriated. We informed the police about the situation and had given them all the details once they came over. We then started to inform the neighbourhood of the incident and were hoping to see if anyone knew of people owning any firing devices or have heard any go off in the last week. We also did some research into firing devices and what to look out for around the area (metal pellets, co2 canisters). All the local pet owners, especially those with cats, are now frightened for their well being.

In terms of the costs of all the scans, tests, surgery and physiotherapy it has amounted to £6,000 which has financially affected our family but we were never going to give up on Momo. We have set up this page for all those that would like to donate something towards his care and needs. We love him dearly and would really appreciate anything but understand if you haven’t got any money to give or just aren’t able to support in that way. Even just sharing our page would provide enough help.

Thank you for any support you can give and hope we can help raise some awareness of the surrounding issue. Any extra donation we receive above our goal will go to a similar campaign or a relevant charity.
