“I wag my tail even when the chips are down.”
My name is Wagster. I have had a hard life.

Recently I found myself in a lot of trouble. I wandered onto a big busy road. Cars were going by me so fast, and they were all around me, I was so scared.

Out of nowhere, I felt horrible pain and I was landed up against a hard, concrete wall.  I hurt so bad and I was so scared. I tried to stand up, but the pain was awful and I couldn’t move one of my back legs, I just kept falling over. I lay there not knowing what to do. How was I going to get someplace safe? Then suddenly there was a lady in front of me and I was so happy to see her I wagged my tail at her. She slowly reached over and started stroking my head. I wagged my tail even harder.

Two men arrived, and the lady started talking to them. Were the men going to help me? I can’t hear what they’re saying, the words are all muffled up. The lady picked me up and carried me to her car. One man walked beside me,  and the other man made the big lights on his truck flash bright and it kinda hurt my eyes.

The lady took me to a place where there were lots of other dogs and cats and I was put in a cage and given some water and something to make my pain better. I got food and water every day and I wagged my tail at everyone that came by my cage, especially the nice lady that brought me kibble. I like kibble. I wagged my tail at everyone, I wanted them to know I was grateful for their help and that I was happy to see them all. I didn’t know what was going to happen to me, but I kept wagging my tail hoping someone would take me home and love me. I lay there in the cage for a bunch of days, my pain was better but I still couldn’t stand up or walk.

Lots of people stopped by my cage to feed me and clean me up, and they talked to me, I still can’t t hear anything so I didn’t know what they were saying, but they all pet me and I could tell they were kind and trying to help me so I kept wagging my tail.

Then one day another lady came to see me. I could tell she was nice too so I wagged my tail at her. Then she put me in her car and we started driving and I was wondering where we were going.

She took me away to another place and left me there. More kind people looked me over and gave me more pills to help my pain. I wagged my tail at them, too. After they looked me over I was put in another cage and I waited some more wondering what was going to happen next.

Then the lady that brought me here showed up again and took me to her home, and you know what? The lady that saved me from the scary road showed up, and I wagged my tail some more! I wag my tail a lot, I want people to know I love them and am grateful for their kindness. The lady from the road and the lady that brought me to her home put me in another cage with soft pads and food and water and toys! Soft toys! I love my soft toys.

I have been in this new place for 4 days and it is calm and soft, and the lady that lives here spends lots of time with me.

I don’t know what’s in store for me, I still can’t walk, and I am still getting lots of pills for my pain.

Will you please share my story with everyone so they can help me too? Because I hope one day I can walk again.

For now, all I can do is wait and see what happens.

-Wagster

A Note from Wagster’s Foster Family:
We don’t know what all happened to Wagster before the night he was found on Hwy 90, but we know it has not been an easy life. Along with his injuries from being hit by a car, X-rays revealed he had been shot multiple times with a BB gun. He also has several puncture wounds, so it appears he was in a dog fight before being hit by a car. He has heartworms, and we have started treatment. He started coughing the first night home, so he likely contracted kennel cough. On top of all of this, Wagster was whipped around so hard when he was hit that he can’t hear. Nobody knew he couldn’t hear because he engages with people so well.  UPDATE Oct 6: His hearing is starting to come back! Hopefully, all of it will. Despite all he has been through, he is very sweet to everyone that he has encountered. He has not growled at all and waggles his tail at everyone he sees. UPDATE Oct 9: At first, Animal Control thought he was about seven years old because of the tartar build-up on his teeth, but with good nutrition and rest, his teeth look incredibly cleaner, so now they think he may be four or five years old.

Despite all he has been through, he has remained a sweet and loving boy filled with happy tail wags.
Wagster needs a lot of expensive medical care before he can go to a forever home.
We want to provide him with a hip replacement since he is such an active dog.

Please donate any amount, no matter how big or small, and then click on the Share link above to share Wagster’s Go Fund Me story far and wide so we can raise funds to treat his medical needs and give him the happy ending he so deserves.

Wagster sends lots of tail wags to everyone.

Tragic Life
Wagster is severely underweight AND had been shot multiple times. The veterinarian counted at least 5 BBs in him.

The Diagnosis
Wagster has a broken pelvic and broken femur (at the ball that goes into the hip). The ball at the top of the thighbone (femur) is called the femoral head.

It’s impressive that Wagster is still so sweet with such major injuries and wags his tail like there’s no tomorrow.

The Surgical Plan
1. Femoral Head Ostectomy (salvage procedure) in 3 weeks OR Full Hip Replacement (PREFERRED $10,000) if we can raise funds.
2. Possible Pelvic plating
3. Heartworm treatment
4. Therapy

Femoral Head Ostectomy vs. Hip Replacement: A break at the femoral head is a common injury seen in a dog hit by a car. Femoral Head Ostectomy is a standard surgery for small dogs.  However, the surgery isn't always successful. The veterinarian removes the ball of the femur that goes into the hip, and then HOPES that enough scar tissue forms around the  end of the cut off femur bone to create a "false joint." If this doesn’t work, the doggie is lame and in pain the rest of his life! For heavier dogs like Wagster, though, a hip replacement is the surgery of choice to enable him to run and play like before he was injured.

Regarding the Pelvic Break
The veterinarian said there is surgery to put a plate over the break in the pelvic, but it’s not commonly performed on a rescue dog because of the cost. Therefore, this procedure is omitted from the Go Fund Me estimate of care. If anyone is interested in funding this pelvic plate option if it is necessary, please reach out to us through our website or Facebook page.

Finding a Forever Home
Let’s keep searching for a forever home for Wagster. He will be up for adoption as soon as he completes his treatments and therapy!

About Saving Grace Dog Rescue

Saving Grace Dog Rescue is a small, independent non-profit 501(c)3 organization (EIN: 47-4079463). They rely 100% on volunteers and donations for their outstanding work. They don’t receive funding from the government or major corporations like the Humane Society and other large non-profits, so the volunteers often use their personal money for veterinary bills and care.

That’s where we step in. Multiple non-profits couldn’t rescue Wagster from ACS because they didn’t have room for another dog with medical needs. Saving Grace is the only rescue who stepped up to the plate and saved Wagster at the last minute. Sadly, only rescue groups are allowed to pull injured dogs out of the system into recovery.

Thank you for supporting Wagster in his journey of recovery.
