Surgery for Markus

Feeling comfortable in our bodies should be a right for everyone, and trans youth face enough challenges to get to that point before adding financial obstacles to overcome.

Chest or “top” surgery is partially funded in Ontario. If you have OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) coverage you may have the mastectomy (chest tissue removal) portion of your surgery covered. If you are seeking contouring to shape your chest (a step usually involved in “top surgery”), an additional cost will be charged directly to you.

Ontario healthcare covers the basic elements of this step towards gender affirmation, but not the aspects that involve shaping the muscle and tissues, as that is deemed cosmetic.

Markus has had a distinct sense of self for years, and the opportunity to affirm his identity so soon is a major win! When he was first given his referral the wait time was 2 years. Thanks to his amazing health care team, the incredible support from his mom and their community of allies, he is lucky to be able to proceed with the next step of his journey this summer! But, we need your help. Your donations will help cover the portion of the surgery that isn’t covered by Ontario healthcare and make a life changing impact on a young man, helping to show our kids the importance of their happiness and self expression.
