Surgery for Byron
Donation protected
As many of you know, life on the road in this business (racing school/driving instruction/ride and drives) takes its toll on all of us physically.
Byron started having sciatic pain a couple months ago and it got steadily worse. At first he began working hard every morning stretching. Then those stretches became something he was required to do all day every day, finding quick moments to escape from work into one of the unused classrooms at the Performance Center long enough to try and loosen up his back, hip and hamstring.
Eventually even the stretching stopped helping and it quickly got to the point where Byron could no longer even sit, stand up or walk (driving was impossible) - and lying on his back was the only reprieve he got from the intense pain.
Byron tried massage, acupuncture and chiropractic care but absolutely nothing worked.
After much insurance company run around and doctor's attempts to solve the problem through inneffective pain killers, Byron was lucky enough to get a phenomenal surgeon to take him on short notice (after much work by Ron VanRekom's wife, Barbara.)
Just prior to surgery Byron's condition had gotten so bad that even getting to the hospital itself required an ambulance.
Luckily, the surgery itself seems to have been a success and after a small lego-like spacer was bolted between two vertebrae Byron appears to be on the mend and should be out of the hospital tomorrow (11/9/19.) However, it isn't over for him just yet, as several weeks of physical therapy are going to be required to get him back to his old self again.
The combination of the cost of surgery (even with insurance), the physical therapy and the loss of work while he recuperates has him at over $20,000 in the red.
That's a large number. So large in fact that I've listed the goal short of that. However, know that every dollar raised beyond the initial goal will ALL be going toward his medical expenses.
I'm hoping that friends of Byron's (in the industry or not) might be able to contribute in any way toward helping him shoulder this expense. As we all know this line of work is unique... few of us ever really retire from it, and fewer still have the luxury of being able to take off for any extended period of time.
Please share this page with as many friends as you can... and even if you're not in a position to contribute monetarily, just passing along the message through your various social media accounts would be absolutely fantstic.
