Hi everyone, my baby sister Akira is in need of your help and prayers. Three weeks ago my baby sister came into this world with unforeseen life threatening complications and is in urgent need of surgery. After having three clean prenatal ultrasounds , we were shocked and heartbroken when baby Akira was born with Spina Bifida.
Spina Bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly. It’s a type of neural tube defect. The neural tube is the structure in a developing embryo that eventually becomes the baby’s brain, spinal cord and tissues that enclose them.
There are three types of Spina Bifida. Baby Akira is suffering from Meningocele. With Meningocele, a sac of fluid comes through an opening in the baby’s back, but the spinal cord is not in the sac. There is usually little or no nerve damage and can cause minor disabilities.
To add to that, she also suffered from severe Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS).
MAS occurs when an infant has a bowel movement (meconium or poo) before birth. The meconium mixes with the amniotic fluid and when the baby breathes before birth, this substance can get into the lungs. The result is irritation and inflammation. In addition, because meconium is thick and sticky, it can also clog the baby’s airways.
Baby Akira suffered with severe MAS which thankfully has improved significantly and so the next step is the
surgery.
With Meningocele, she can move her legs but as with any spinal surgery, there is a possibility that she may not be able to after the surgery and would require physical therapy to aid her.
Your donations would be of great help to us and Baby Akira’s future.
Thank you in advance for your kind contributions and please include her in your prayers.
