We’re going to be honest: it’s been hard for all of us to admit that we may need to start a process like this one. There’s a vulnerability that comes with straight-up asking both loved ones and strangers alike for money. A fear of seeming presumptuous or entitled, even if it’s for the most honorable of reasons. But after reading through the multiple success stories stemming from this lovely fundraising site, we knew we should at least give it a try.
Most of you know our Mama because she’s touched your life and given it a little magic. Always there for the people she loves, Mom has the tendency to extend herself even further when it comes to connecting on a heart level, even with people she doesn’t know.
Most of you also probably know that Mommy has been very sick for quite a long time now. For 20 years she has tried to get to the bottom of her health ailments and severe physical pain. For 20 years she has not been able swallow food properly, has not been able to keep from choking on saliva when she talks, has not been able to speak much louder than a whisper or move her atrophying body without intense pain. This is all due to paralyzation in her muscles and (as it turns out) dead nerves in her brain, the underlying cause of which is still in question.
She’s been given many labels, many medications, and many cold shoulders because no one wants to take on an “unwinnnable” case. We’ve been to Stanford over and over again during the past couple of years, and they seem stumped. The appointments come and go, but the disappointment continues.
Mama’s body is weak, and there have been a few surgeries recommended to make her life a little easier while we continue to investigate the cause of further bodily breakdown.The time has come to try whatever is offered to us, but these surgeries and recovery care periods aren’t cheap, and some of them aren’t covered.
We are aiming for $15,000, and hope that gets us somewhere. With whatever we are able to collect, we will move forward with the surgeries her doctors feel are the most pertinent. As we said before, it feels bizarre to ask loved ones for such a donation and then ask them to spread the word outside our circle, but we are hoping that with your love and support we can not only extend Mom’s life, but also make it an easier one to live.
