Donation protected
The Unity Centre has been running for almost 10 years now – initially founded in March 2006, we have a tiny office that is a 1 minute walk from the Home Office building in Glasgow.
We provide practical support and unconditional solidarity for migrants – sharing information and making referrals so people can access food, clothing, shelter, asylum support, other support, advice, legal representation and much more.
If you believe strongly in our work, please also consider setting up a standing order or donating via paypal to avoid crowdfunding fees! Email us at [email redacted] for more info or visit http://unitycentreglasgow.org/donate-to-the-unity-centre/ for these details.
Often we work in emergency situations, so people don’t have to sleep on the streets or can access the care they need when they are at their most vulnerable. We are a safe and welcoming space for people as they navigate the often brutal and always bureaucratic asylum and immigration systems.
We are open Monday to Friday 9:30am – 5pm. We also run a 24 hour, 7 days a week emergency phone line. Unity does not receive any regular funding, we can only exist with the small but very valued donations that people who care about what we do give us. Unity is run entirely by volunteers and it is non-hierarchical, there are no staff on salaries, no hidden costs.
Though our running costs are low, we urgently need financial support to continue. Every little helps! Mainly, we need to pay our rent (£300 per month), our phone bill (sometimes up to £200 per month!), other bills and office supply costs also all add up! Any donation is very much appreciated, especially as The Unity Centre’s work is needed more than ever.
And please see below too for our ‘wish list’.
We do not distinguish between the migrants that we help, as many charities are forced to do. We work on problems big and small, never discriminating between those in need and often catching those that have 'fallen through the cracks'. Mainly, we are busy with casework. Whether it is an asylum seeker that has just arrived in the UK, someone calling from immigration detention, a destitute migrant family or a homeless refugee – Unity supports people as they present to us.
When people have to report at the Home Office they come in to see us first, we have a book they sign, then when they come out, they sign again to let us know they’re safe. If people are detained we can act with urgency, notifying friends and family and helping to secure people lawyers or making referrals to organisations like Medical Justice, to try and get them released.
We try to encourage mutual aid and to strengthen community links between different groups to promote collective action. We want to empower the migrant community and reduce isolation.
