Macy's Mission in Guatemala

Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I played school with my dolls constantly and created elaborate worksheets for them (a.k.a me) to complete. However, college has completely changed my perception of what education is and what it means to be an educator in the 21st century. Through various classes and experiences I've become passionate about language, diversity and culture as they relate to education. This interest led me to apply for a study abroad trip within the College of Education at UT, and when I was accepted last fall I couldn't have been more excited. I responded with worship, as I see this trip as an opportunity to not only expand my academic horizons, but also share my story with a culture completely different than my own. I believe that genuine faith produces everyday mission, and while this trip isn't religious in nature- I certainly see it as a part of my everyday mission with Christ.

While in Guatemala I will be staying with a host family and taking two courses, one that focuses on the sociocultural influences on learning and another that focuses on the Latin American culture and Spanish language. Both work together to explore the relationship between schools and the larger society as related to diversity. These classes are important to me for many reasons, one of which being my personal and academic goal of becoming fluent in Spanish. While I know that six weeks (the duration of my trip) won't make me fluent, I hope that this trip will be another stepping stone to my achievement. In addition to these two courses, I will spend a substantial amount of time volunteering in Guatemalan schools where I will both develop and teach ESL lessons to Maya children.

However, as exciting as this trip is, the financial reality has begun to sink in. The projected cost from my university is $6,761. If you feel called to donate anything at all to my mission, I would greatly appreciate it. I fully believe that this is where God has intended for me to be this summer, and trust that through prayer and His hand, my financial needs will be met. Thank you in advance for everything!
