Hey Everyone! My name is Soranica. I am a fulltime student at the University of Rhode Island. There I am pursuing an education in Communication Studies and Art. As a first generation college student and Cambodian- American the road to graduating has had its up and downs. From the age of fourteen to present, my attention was set on working and maintaining. I did this with the intention that my mother wouldn’t have to. Like rip currents, work was easy to get caught up in; I was constantly stuck in the motions. I put aside my dreams and I began to feel lost in unwanted priorities. However, being exposed to the academic realm of a university has shifted my focus to realizing who I am and can be. It’s been that breathe I needed to push through.
With that being said, a few months ago I took a leap of faith by applying to the AIFS program to study abroad. Traveling has always been a dream of mine that I once thought was impossible. I’m happy to finally announce that I was accepted into this semester program and will be leaving spring of 2017 to London, England!! From January to May I will be taking classes that will be credited towards my major and minor at URI. In London I hope to gain personal growth and a greater understanding of the world. By putting forth my responsibility as an older cousin, Cambodian- American, child of refugees and a student of academics and life, I aspire to be a prime example of chasing dreams.
Although I’ve been working hard to save up and receive help from grants for these months away, I’ve realized I can’t do this alone. So I am reaching out to friends, family, and anyone else interested in investing in my dreams and education. I am grateful for any amount you chose to donate. Studying in a multicultural city like London, filled with music and arts is the experience I need to reach my potential in life and in my educational goals. This is why I need your support. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Thank you for believing in me. Every kind word and penny is truly appreciated. Your support would mean the world to me and empower me on this journey.
