Molten Metal Works Needs You

Molten Metal Works is LA’s community metal shop with classes, membership, and open shop to the public.  MMW started in 2010 with the goal of teaching welding and metalwork for everyone, with classes in what most people need—how to build furniture, how to make sculpture, and how to make their own repairs.  And over the past ten years, we’ve taught over 4500 people to weld, and expanded our reach to teach family welding classes, women-identifying and LGBTQA classes, and offered at-cost classes to teens and college students.

Hopefully you've either taken a class with us or want to and value what we offer to LA. And in order to keep LA a vibrant and interesting place to live and give you a community to be a part of, we'll need some help.

With the closure order extended into May, it’s becoming clear that we’re gonna need a little help to get through this tough time.

Normally MMW offers classes seven days a week and open shop 5 days/week but with the closure we can’t do any of that.  Revenue has dropped to almost zero. But rent continues and there’s been no relief in sight for commercial tenants. The rainy day fund is dwindling and realistically, we’re not going to make that revenue back with the months lost (though I’m trying--wanna buy 1200 plant stands?).

So I am asking for your help in trying to raise $15,550 by May 1.

-
There's full accounting below, but short version is that its rent and utilities for two months for the closure.  I'm going to continue my hardest to find other sources of funding and revenue, but the SBA funding I was hoping for has been fully allocated (while our application was pending) and the second round of funding is stalled in Congress.

There’s also payroll, employee medical benefits, buildout loan payments, payments for materials and consumables, and various maintenance requirements that round out our monthly expenses, but it's these non-deferrable expenses that are most pressing right now.

Any additional amounts over the goal will go towards getting back going in June, July, or whenever we're allowed to open back up. It's going to be a slow process as people are allowed back out, so we anticipated smaller classes then too.

In any case, we’re looking forward to seeing you as soon as this Safer at Home order is lifted so  we can teach you how to weld, how to make your own furniture, how to make yard art, how to fix that old Camaro, or just come for a really fun date night shooting sparks and making a cowbell.

With gratitude and love,
Matt, Karla, Arthur, Caroline, and ZZ
