Hey y'all, my name is Claire and I am raising funds for two very important people in my life. People who have given everything to their community and this city throughout the years. People who literally bend over backwards to make this world a better, safer place. People who many of us know and love dearly: Mickey and Meg.

On the morning of August 7th, Mickey was driving home when they fell asleep at the wheel, hit a tree, and were projected from the car. They were missing all of Friday before Meg was able to finally locate them in the ICU at UMC, listed as an unidentified person.

We are so grateful that no one else was hurt, and that Mickey "walked" away with their life. I say "walked" away, but really it's more like "wheeled" away as they sustained life altering injuries- a broken hip, broken ankle, leg broken in multiple places, as well as internal bleeding in their head -which will leave them in a wheelchair, then walker, for a good little bit. Their braces were also completely busted in the crash.

Mickey will be out of work for the foreseeable future, and the bills are stacking up - we all know the reality of the cost of living and our lacking healthcare system. On top of that, the car Mickey was driving belonged to Meg and is completely totaled. Because they only had liability coverage, they are on the hook for everything. Mickey still owes $4,000 on a payment plan for recent repairs, plus $5,000 left on the loan from Meg's original purchase- we all know the struggle is real. And, since Mickey can't be alone right now, Meg had to take off work to be able to stay home and care for them around the clock.

We are hoping to raise $15,000 to cover what’s owed on the car, keep up with day-to-day bills, cover the cost of wheel chair accessible transpo to and from appointments, and to help pay medical expenses.

This is no easy burden, but as two people who have showed up and helped countless others - from being organizers, activists, and teachers, to never letting a stomach go hungry, to taking in and housing multiple people over the years (including me), to having a community fridge in front of their house and regularly stocked for years, to helping start the New Orleans Hospitality Workers Alliance and New Orleans Workers Assembly which contributed greatly to assisting local workers organizing committees and union campaigns over the years - it is OUR turn to show up and help take care of them.
